Subject: Statins and Methatrexate

I don't know if this is the right place to put this but I feel people should be aware. In May 2005 my stepfather died of cholesterol poisoning due to taking cholesterol tablets with his Methatrexate, both prescribed by doctors. He took the methatrexate for his RA.We were not aware that cholesterol poisoning was a side effect and have since been told that a simple inexpensive blood test could have detected the poisoning. He died a terrible death as it broke down his muscle tissue and then attacked the rest of his body systems. It is as rare as 1 in 250,000, but is still possible when statins are mixed with methatrexate. Has anybody else ever been warned that this was possiible or come across it before or been offered a blood test to check. I know we can't bring him back but I want the public aware that this is possible. Brian was only 66 years old.

Esther,
Thank you for your courage for expressing your feelings that you wrote about the so-called "WONDER DRUG" (Methatrexate). My boyfriend recently lossed his mother, in a similar matter, by mixing RA prescribed drugs. Please, feel free to contact us anytime to discuss our situations.

Thanks again,

Chris & Erin

Other than having RA, my 84 year old dad was very healthy. He doesnt have high blood pressure or cholestrol, no diabetes, no cancer. He is now in the ICU with severe cirrhosis of the liver that is attributed soley to prolonged use of methotrexate. This drug is killing people.

Thank you for alerting us to this Esther - but so sad we had to learn this way. We really do need more information about mixing medications. I'm Diabetic and wasn't told that the Steroid Inj would push my blood sugar readings up. It did and I was so worried - it was only a Diabetes forum I'm on who told me about this - not the Rheumatologist !! i'm also on Simvastatin but I take Plaquenil for RA.

Hi Esther, I am sorry your lost your stepfather this way. Unfortunately, when you have one thing wrong with you the medical profession often doesn't look into the other conditions, which is what happened to my mother I believe. At one point we did the research to find out she was on a drug that shouldn't be prescribed if you have a compromised liver (she did.) Her GP just wouldn't listen to her complaints about side effects and put them down to other factors. He didn't want her to stop the drug but she pushed him on it and improved very quickly when she did. However, I thought the whole point of the regular blood test was to pick up liver damage...? I am actually questioning my test results and prescribed drugs at the moment. Am getting a referral to a liver specialist to make sure there is nothing sinister going on. I would recommend anyone with consistently abnormal results asks for the same thing.
This is an important issue for those of us on these drugs and thanks for raising it.
