Subject: no place for me at work :(

Hi all,
ive been off work for a few months now as i was in so much pain,i work in a very large electrical store and it involves standing talking to customers sometimes for ages, running around quite a lot and we are not allowed to sit down, today i went in to see if i could possibly do anything else like customer service admin cashier, something where i could sit down but be useful, anyway i was told there was no role or money to create that role just for me,its just hurts too much if i stand for too long or walk around too much,so now i dont know what to do, i have 10 weeks ssp left and i feel kind of unwanted!i loved my job and i want to work!

That's really bad, employers aren't allowed to discriminate on grounds of disability and have to make reasonable adjustments for returning to work. On the direct.gov.uk site under employment rights it says employers may be able to claim costs from the 'Access to Work' programme at the jobcentre. Might be worth talking to them to take your case up for you? Good luck.

Kathy, are you a member of the union? They should give you some advice. They can't just say they are concerned you might go off sick. Anyone might go off sick at any time. They can't discriminate against you in this way. I'm sure there's stuff in the law to protect you. Give the CAB a ring too. If you go onto Arthritis Care website forum there is a whole section dedicated to work matters. You might get some good advice there too. Most importantly, don't agree to anything until you've had proper advice.

I think you can join a union and ask them to help at the same time. In fact, a friend of mine did when she was having some trouble at work. USDAW is the shopworkers/factory etc union. I don't know if your work has to be affliated, anyway, they will soon tell you. Have a look at their website. You could ring them up and ask for some advice. There are laws to protect you. Don't just get booted out of your job because of your GP. Maybe you will have to change to another surgery. I did and best decision I ever made.
Try not to get too down about it and seek some advice.
love S
