Subject: taking prednisone and still in pain

I don't want to have to increase my dosage of prednisone but i am still very sore in the morning and still have trouble sleeping. Is there anything else i could do to minimize my pain/ stiffness in the am? I don't have insurance so i can't really afford any of the new RA meds out there? Is pain medication used with steroids?

been to the rhumatologist. He THINKS i have RA- i can't afford the bloodwork to be sure (just one of them is $400 dollars)- no insurance means you have to pay for everything yourself and everything is really expensive. i live in Cleveland, Ohio (USA)

Paula so sorry to hear you have to pay for everything, We are so lucky here in England we have our national health service and dont have to pay, Is there no way you can get help from anywhere else have you tried a heat pad to help with the pain it works for me sometimes. Is prednisone an anti inflamatry? And yes you can still take pain medication with steroids. tc x

hi Paula, sorry to hear you are in pain. I take amitriptyline at night (20mg) for pain and it helps me sleep. It shouldn't be an expensive drug as has been around for decades. Ask your rheumy about it. I take pred, amitrip, sometimes co-codamol and methotrexate (which has also been around for decades and can't be as expensive as the newer ones). Some people take anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen but I can't as they irritate my stomach. They can be very effective for inflammatory arthritis but you need to take a stomach protector.
