Subject: REACTIVE ARTHRITIS AFTER FOOD POISONING

4 YEARS AGO I HAD CAMPYLOBACTOR FOOD POISONING AFTER A VISIT TO THE DOMINICAN. I WAS SO ILL I COULD NOT GET OUT OF BED FOR 3 WEEKS DUE TO FEVER SWOLLEN JOINTS AND ALSO SEVERE LOOSE STOOLS DUE TO THE FOOD POISONING. IT TOOK MONTHS TO TRY AND GET BACK TO NORMAL. MY JOINTS WOULD HURT EVERY TIME I BECAME TIERD OR EVEN IF I PICKED UP A COLD. THEN CAME THE SEVERE FATIGUE, SO BAD I COULD'NT COPE.
4 YEARS ON I HAVE BEEN FOBED OFF BY VARIOUS DOCTORS. DOING EVERY TEST IN THE BOOK TO FIND THE CAUSE TO MY CONTINUING JOINT PAINS AND SEVERE BOUTS OF FATIGUE. OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS IT HAS BECOME MARKEDLY WORSE AND ON FRI I WAS SO ILL I COULD NOT GET OUT OF BED AGAIN. JOINT PAINS ALL OVER ESPECIALLY MY HANDS. IM FINDING THAT I AM DOING LESS AND LESS.
IS THERE ANYONE ELSE THAT IS HAVING A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE OR AM I JUST GOIN MAD.

Hello

I don't know if this helps but I don't think you are mad at all.

Several years ago I too had CAMPYLOBACTO food poisoning and then shortly after started developing joint pain. I don't know if the two are related but seems a bit of a coincidence???

It has taken many years and many tests for me to be diagnosed but I have now just been told I have Rheumatoid arthritus.

Sometimes rheumatoid arthritus can be really difficult to diagnose it has taken me seven years as it did not show up in my blood. Some joint Damage showed up in xrays and MRI scans but the doctor couldn't say for sure what was wrong. I was finally diagnosed by having a small operation on my shoulder and having some tissue removed from the joint for testing. Maybe you could speak to your doctor about this if your situation doesn't improve.

Good luck and don't give up

Kate

I was diagnosed with reactive arthritis after what was thought to be a viral infection. I had to be hospitalised because I could not walk much or even feed or dress myself. It was absolute sheer hell. It did get a little better after 6 months but have experiences quite alot of days when I feel totally tired all the time. I am experiencing a joint pain in my toes, feet, ankles and it is spreading to my hands and shoulds, AGAIN! At least I know it is not anything fatal this time as it scared the hell out of me the first time. I think the truth is the doctors don't fully understand it and it is trial and error for them. As Kate stated a proper diagnosis can take time. At least you know you are not going mad. It appears we have a condition that seems to baffle the medical profession as I saw numerous doctors and consultants at the hospital and they openly admitted that in many cases the cause is not found for reactive arthritis (poly arthritis). If you ever want to chat or have any questions let me know. Fortunately for me my son is studying medicine and has helped me deal with my feelings about this dreadful conditon. I take anti inflamatories but they are not helping much at the moment to fend off this attack. See doc at end of week again.
