Subject: Work through the pain

Hi, Can anyone please verify if this is true: I was told that if you have pain in an arthritic joint, e.g. a knee, you must exercise that joint as much as you can. Apparently the exercise break down the little arthritis crystals and it will improve the mobility of the joint. Many thanks, Ina

Hey Ina, I was always told that if its a hot swollen joint then to rest until its calmed down but if its not hot then gentle exercise may help. When Im swollen though I couldnt bear the thought of exercising!

hi Ina, I was told gentle exercise too. Swimming is very good as it doesn't put stress on the joint.

even swimming hurts my neck, feet(when they flip back and forth) shoulders etc, so all I do is hold on to sides, and gently exercise my legs.....kinda like Hydrotherapy really....I know they say swimming is great due to the weightlessness etc, but honestly, I get no pleasure swimning, guess becos my Body is aged 80 summat....well my tendons r 4 sure...seems 75/80year olds have it by then! Tsk!!

Verity Hi....saw gp yest, and he said he thinks its due to the GB removal, I know my body well, and im gettting back those blidddy rotten contraction type pain under the ribs(middle of), shoots thru to my spine!...my gp is gr8, wonderful man, he agrees that the Gastritis is nasty, and given me extra strong gaviscon, and other gas resistant mees, im pissed offf becos ive been thru a lot having that gb out(which GP mentioned was Major op, even tho keyhole, he said hes seen gb ok by keyhole, and they pull u this way and that inside(4 holes)....even late in night i drank water and the tum pain kicked off....can drink water today tho, also another lady I met in hosp few months back, she had hers out last mon and she isnt geting the pain I am, so it MNust be the Gastritis, that can take a long time to heal too.....so im double peed offf!! anyway, If i dont eat, then I dont get the pain, and then dont feel unwell, so guess I wont eat LOLOLOL sorted!!! hows u sweetie? x

hi Jill, that sounds a bit rubbish, esp as you were feeling so good last week. I know when I had keyhole surgery 3 years ago (appendix, ovary and fallopian tube) I felt much worse than they said I would and for much longer. It takes ages for the gas they use to inflate your stomach so they can see everything to disperse for a start, and it can be very, very painful - cramping type of pain. So maybe it's that too. Try and take it easy.

Glad you are coping ok. I was really annoyed when I had my op that they were so dismissive about the amount of pain I had. In the end they agreed it wasn't normal and they should have done something earlier! Story of my life lol! I'm ok thanks, had a busy weekend and have been trying to get out in the sun a bit. Rheumy nurse put my steroids up a bit - and I mean a bit - lmg - very helpful, I don't think! I do feel less gloomy this week though and the shoulder pain isn't as bad I have to admit. Got a new policy of trying to not let things bother me - neighbours, noise, bad drivers etc. Sort of working, a bit lol! Thought it might be better for my mental health! We'll see.
take care
