Subject: fusion of wrist

Iam about to go into hospital to have my right wrist re-fused. It was dune 20years ago with limited success. I hate the inactivity and inconvenience of a p.o.p. and not being able to drive.

Hi Linda, hope the op was successful & that you are now recovering well. Perhaps you could let us know how your getting on as we do have people wanting to know about this proceedure from someone who's had it done...

My wrists are on their way out! I've had RA for about 8 years. My consultant mentioned that if they got too painful I could have them fused but I refused for now cause there's still movement in both. To be honest I'm scared of my wrists going and how it will restrict me. I've just seen the X-ray of my left shoulder and that is badly damaged as well.

Hi Jill

No I'm not having anything done yet. They only hurt when I bang them sideways and sometimes if they are touched too hard so I can cope with that.

I've just got used to my shoulder! Its amazing how you just gradually use other parts of your body to do things - at work I staple things together with my arm instead of my hands (I'm a secretary). Putting my coat on is a bit of a pain but hey thats part of it.

In a nutshell I'm quite happy how I am at the moment - having my retuximab infusion next month!

Hi, I am just recovering from a wrist fusion, I am now into my 3rd week, just had my stitches out and my wrist replastered. I had my thumb done at the same time as the tendon had broke so had to have one of my other tendons re-routed.

I was in hospital for 3 days in total, I had to have my left wrist/thumb done which is my dominient hand so you can imagine everyday tasks are not easy, but I am very surprised what I can actually do.

The pain has surprised me also, it aches and was painful when the feeling came back in my arm but only for a few days, now there is really no pain at all.

Not sure what life will be like when I get the use of my hand back with a fused wrist will let you know.

I'm seeing a surgeon next month to see if my surgeons wish of me having a wrist replacement is going ahead or if its to be a fusion, my wrist is badly deformed with arthritis, I wear a splint everyday and take pain relief most days, not 100% sure I want a replacement I've been told I will still only get around 50% use of it back,
