Subject: A YES from the surgeon to replace my hips!

Woooo! I was expecting a proper fight with me being only 24. He was soooo nice, looked me in the eye the whole time and wasn't even slightly patronising. Said hed be willing to do both at the same time, just gotta confirm with my rheummy week on fri! My god! Has anyone had both done in the same op??

He mentioned that they might wanna try me on anti TNF before the ops just in case but then id have to come off it a month before the op and stay off it for a month afterwards. Personally I dont think its gonna be worth the pain coz ill be in a state with no meds.

Im really excited!

Verity fab news, not heard of both done at same time, blimey that will be hard wont it? thing is with the Anti tnf meds, u r so right, u do have to come off them month b4 and deffo a month after, or until u feel well enough...thing is, they take a while to get into system, my understanding was that...lol ive been on my Enbrel way over a year n half and im now unsure as I type this if the Bio meds take that long....got a brainal blockage there....personally tho, If I was having your ops say, in month or so, or even three, I wld wait till after the Ops, so no interuption of the anti tnf...U can still take all your pain killers tho, up until the day of op.....Im happpy for u....but ask about the anti tnf, if its worth it, if u have say a 6.8month wait for ops, then worth going on them til then....goood luck and gr8 news for u x

Hi Jill!
Ive never heard of having both done at the same time either, just been trying to figure out how id be able get up and downstairs as our stairs are almost a foot high (per step) and curl round aswell. Its my biggest struggle in the house. May have to stay with my parents for a few days.
The surgeon told me there is a 6 month waiting list but if my rheummy agreed he'd not need to see me again and just see me straight in pre-op (which will be a lot sooner than 6 months). Still shocked how simple it was. Defo thought Id have to fight or justify myself.

Am I right in thinking that if I did go on the anti tnf then they wouldnt necessarily take me off the MTX? Because I can stay on the MTX whilst having the op. If that was the case then coming off the anti tnf for the op would be no worse than how I am now?

Gonna have to write some questions down for next rheummy appt next friday i think(she doesnt have great social skills so she scares me and i forget lol).

Im very excited, its nerve wracking but could potentially change my life. Cant wait!

How are you feeling anyway Jill? Have you finally got sorted? (as sorted as you can be anyway!)

That's great news Verity! When my friend had her hip replaced they didn't let her out til she could go up a step or two so you might be alright - though it makes sense to go to your parents so they can look after you! Can't believe you will have both done at once though! Suppose you may as well do it all in one go.

I think his reasoning is that becasue Im young I should be able to recover quicker from having both done. Its a bit daunting though isn't it! lol
He wants to use the ceramic hips and said occasionally they squeak. Haha. I can cope with that! lol

Verity, ya right u r having major surgery, and ya brave to be having two at same time, do u know what type of Hip ops u r having? recently, they habe been doing Pioneering work at my local hospital on replacement hips....A good freind had hers done, total new Hip, but using smaller incisons and smaller instuments(nind u, the new hip joint sis big isdnt it.....I saw her incison was about 7 inches long! she recovered(pain gone within 8 days) operation pain and discomfort I mean, she is over the moonn with her new hip, she had it done last year, No pain at all.......

thing is, she did use crutches, all im wondering about U, is how r u going to cope with both hips otta action? cos I thought they wld only do one, so that other leg can support ya new hip etc....mind U, what do I know lolol, thoguth R.A. attakces only small joints LOL(so rubbish website read) mind um prop my rubbish brain, read it wrong......

anyway, fact yur young and strong, no babies to worry about, mb that is y they have decided to go for it with u, also kinda makes sense to me that they wld do both, becos it wld be horrible for u to be in bad pain in the hip they dont operate on, and the New hip will be uncomfy for a while, but will get better, so I reckon, they think, well ya in pain in both, get them both done, ane recover equally at same time withy ya new hips........Ok V, U have to Name ya New left and right hip, sounds mad I know, but hey, be a giggle....so got any ideas? lolol.....blimey im defffo going crazy here!! lol

Lol , the rehab is what Im most worried about. All the info Ive read about coping afterwards says to use the unoperated hip for support. Also to use your arms to slide yourself onto things which I cant do. Not bothered about the op really (well I can cope with it anyway lol) its the managing afterwards! Ill be staying at me parents for a week or two afterwards becasue their house is more 'user friendly' than mine lol. Theyve said theyll take time off work so i wont be on my own ever. When I remind myself its only gonna be temporary and Ill actually have no hip pain (just op pain) and that ultimately im gonna feel so much better, I think we'll manage.

I told the doc Im up for anything he can throw at me so at least I know he was listening! lol

Im sure there are other ways of coping after two hips done that they'll tell me when its all definate. Just dont think it happens very often does it??

Itll be a couple of weeks of being spoilt by me parents so it'll be a nice break too! haha

V I think that is a Gr8 way of looking at it that way, its a positive way, ya right it will be Op revcovery pain, rather than the pain u r having now... know u live with ya bf, cant u make yur place user freindly, im assunming u mean like grab rails etc? stairs? LOLOL go home for a lovely time, dinnners all cooked for u, they will be waiting on u, plus get all that Mum and dad love...how gr8 is that....anyone heard from Lucy? she was having her hip done, have U Verity?

congratulations on your great news. I was 20 when I had my left hip replaced and 21 with the second. I'm now 30 and they're still going strong!!! (I had the ceramic furlong hips - not noticed any squeaking).

Youth is definitely on your side!!! I was about four weeks recovering with mine and then just took it a bit easier for the following couple of months. Make sure to do the exercises they gave you religiously, I wasn't quite as able to do them so well with the second operation as I was quite weak and not very well for about 10 days after and so don't have quite as much movement in that one now.

Hopefully they'll be able to get you a cancellation appointment - I only had to wait five weeks with my second.

Good luck - it'll all be worth it!!!

Thats good to know Louloubelle! Been a bit concerned about recovering but I'll face it when it happens I think. So do you get any pain in your hips now? And has it been as good as youd expected?

Take care xx

Subject: Re: A YES from the surgeon to replace my hips!

I don't have any pain now. Only time I ever even remember that my hips aren't my own is when I've been outside in the bitter cold for too long and I get a very odd sensation down my thigh bone. Even now that I'm having a bad time with my joints I am not having any discomfort in my hips.

It came as a bit of a shock for me having to have my hips replaced. I'd had no pain all my life in my hips (plenty in all my other joints). Went to bed one night, turned over, heard a snap and then couldn't walk and ended up in a wheel chair. Rheumy sent me for an MRI scan and my left hip was totally worn away - snap was a hole appearing in my cartilidge which was protecting me from any pain. At that point my right hip wasn't too bad but the same thing happened almost exactly one year later.

I was amazed at how quick the recovery was. I was expecting to be months before I was able to do anything but after 4 weeks was itching to get back to work and behave normally. I really hope you have as much success and keep asking if you can have it done sooner than six months - if they can fit you in it'd be best to get it over with!!

All the best.

Told U Verity about my m8 that had hers done last year, Like Louloubelle, she recovered after 4 weeks and itching to get bk to work..hers has been a complete success, u will be same cos ya strong.....I spoke to Moonfairy(Lin) she rang me yest, she had a major spine op on her facet joints, t5hat hold the vertabra together, they fused a par of it, 5 weeks on, shes still in agony, going to take her 6/8 monthsd to fully recover! her surgeon told her that, so as u see, that is Y im worried bout having my fusion.....plus that other worry I told U about(Reiters Disease etc) mine will take that long , if not longer, so the Beauty of having Hips replaced, is the recovery is only weeks, Infact my m8 felt the pain go after 2 weeks)....Also V, if after my spineop, my Hips still hurt, then they will have to replace my right Hip for sure, cos that is what he wanted to do, but throt it was coming from my back....Just hope hes right........Verity, U will be fine, and I wld do what Louloubelle said to do, get on that cancellation list, sooner its done the better, u will have all summer to recover, in the sun x

oh cheers Jill, really does make a difference having encouragement. I spoke to Moonfairy briefly on facebook last night and she mentioned her op. She said she had done about 7 weeks of recovery already, didnt realise it would take 8 months! In that respect, Im lucky its my hips and not my back. When will you find out about dates for your spine op? Hopefully soon, coz the sooner you have it done the sooner you can start healing. At least were not having to give up an active life for these ops lol!

Hi Verity,

Hows the hips hun, hope your ok x

I was just wondering where your having your hips done (which hospital). I ahve to have both mine done also and have my pre op for the left this Thus. Problem is the other has deteriorated so much the past two months and I feel they both need doing at the same time as otherwise my recovery wont be as good.

I am going to pursue this on Thus but am guessing they will say no again so I just wondered where yourhaving yours done may help me fight my case ha. I'm 30 for god sakes I want my life back grrrr!!!!!

Ive been on the bone smart forum and theres a really experienced orthapedic nurse on there that suggested I contact Writhington Hospital as they have the expertise and the surgeons there are more experienced. Apparantly we can choose where to be treated love.

Hope yours happen quickly for you....lets get back to living he he x

I've not had this done but I have a friend who had both done at the same time a few years ago, she was 20. And she says they're fab and even though it was tough, she has no regrets at all and forgets they're not her real hips. So yeah, best of luck i'm sure you'll be glad you did it! Oh yeah she also said that they went in through her bum area, if you know what i mean, so she only has a small scar on each cheek and even in a bikini you can't see them. So that's a bonus, if they do yours that way too!

Jen, thats really good to know! Dont really hear of many ppl havin both done at same time so dont hear many good stories!

Lucy, ifyou feel its got that much worth then def pursue it. Im having it done in Gobowen at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orphopaedic. They do a lot of joints research and stuff. My surgeon is called Mr Neill Graham and has done loads of hips in young people. He's supposedly the best round here. Where do ya live Lucy?
I havent had any dates yet unfortunately : ( Cant wait!
Hope youre well xx

Hi Verity,

I had my per op today and have a date for the 27th of April. They wont do both for me at once due to higher incidence of infection apparantly. My left hip is worse so at least that one will be done.

Im having mine done at Fairfeild Hospital In Lancashire and ive been on the bone smart forum talking to lots of hippies and they said its a good hospital.

Have they not said when yours is likely to be done then Verity? Were both young your alot younger than me i'm 30 so hopefully we will be back to our active lives very soon :)

Keep in touch and let me know how you get on

Love Lucy x
