Subject: open uni course and disability
hi all i am looking at starting an open uni course and heard that you dnt need to pay for it if you are on disability does anyone no how i go about this. it will hopefuly give me something to do as i cant work at the moment however i am desperatly hoping that once illness is under control i can go back to work again as i find it is mentally distressing not socializing and just having my husband to talk to which dnt get me wrong is nice to have but do miss meeting and talking to different people. and slowly feel i am loosing so much confidence i feel i am a lot more reserved than i was when i was working and i realy dnt like the new me. i used to be so happy and bubbly always out for good time and now im just moody snappy and constantly board.

Hi Kylee. I'm afraid I can't answer your question about DLA as I am still trying to get mine,So bloody hard. I would think it's different here in Ireland. Anyway, I know exactly what you'r saying about been out of work and the need for meeting people. I was out of work for over a year due to OA in hands and feet, I was cracking up, nothing to do andnowhere to go, and there's only so much cleaning you can do. About 7 months ago the dole sent me to a place called The National Learning Network it's a place for people with disabilities, any form. I'm doing a course called Information Technology and Office Skills. 2 months into the course I was hit with Fibromyalgia, I couldn't walk for about 5 weeks,I was devestated. I had just started making new friends and my confidence was growing. I hate so much been at home, on my own. When I was feeling just a little bit better I struggled to walk 2 school, it's only about 500 yards, I got the bus. Sitting all day was killing me and I often found myself in the loo crying with pain but I didn't want 2 go home 2 look at 4 walls. I never tought I'd like the course as much as I did, but the craic we have is great, that's worth getting up 4. Sorry I'm getting carried away now, your probably asleep by now, ha. I rarely have a drink and I quit smoking so going to school each day,IS my social life, I'd be lost without it. Good luck with everything Kaylee ;-)

Hey Kylee, Im not sure about Open university but a friend of mine that has crohns and doesn't claim DLA (yet!) is doing a psychology course and as far as I know she hasn't had to pay anything. Theyve also fitted her room at home with a brand new desk and comp etc. So theres definately stuff available to you! It may even be open university, im just not sure. xx
