Subject: For the Girls .. HRT,THE PILL. and RA

Hi, Just been doing a bit more research on RA, and read something quite interesting from the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Association.
A few quotes.....
Connection is being seen between Menopause and RA.
HRT is often used to counter the effects of menopause.
That increase of hormone levels may negatively affect the developement of RA.
This may play a key role in fight against RA. Women who take birth control containing estrogen have lower incidence of RA.
It also mentioned breast feeding mums free from RA while feeding but as soon as it stops the RA comes back with a vengence.
I wonder, how many of us suffering have taken the pill or still taking it or hrt??
It would be interesting to see. It would soon put those statements either to bed or us all off to our GPs for estrogen lol.

Forgot to add, I have never taken the pill in my life or taken HRT, and started with RA 2 years ago, just as menopause kicked in.

hi Angela, thanks for your interesting post. I've read the article 'female sex hormones and RA' but can't find anything specifically related to the menopause, apart from a mention of oestrogen replacement therapy. Could you tell me how to find the article making the connection between menopause and RA? Would be interested to read it.

Could you clarify what you said about the increase in hormone levels negatively affecting the development of RA? Can't find that anywhere.
Maybe I am missing something :)

I can't take oestrogen in any case as am high risk for breast cancer but did take progesterone supplements when I was in my 40's for severe PMT. Wonder if this may be a factor for me?

I went through the meno at age 40 I tried HRT but the hormones gave me crippling Migraines so I stopped taking anything apart from calcium supplements from the GP. Started with OA well before then and I am convinced that the epidural I had with my 2nd baby started my back hurting as they got a trainee to attempt to numb me - he took 3 goes before they got a qualified one to do it straight away !!

Im now in the diagnosis stage for IA so still waiting ........

Hiya all,Thanks for your replies.
So Val and Verity you both take or have taken the pill, and Val HRT yet you both still have it.

As for myself,Sandra, BSK and Kayjay it doesn't look like we have taken anything so could there be a connection with oestrogen dificiency for us maybe?? or maybe its just hoping!!!!
It will be interesting to see a few more posts to have a good head count.
It could be pie in the sky, but there is research going on about it,so it might help some of us to get some relief.
BSK regarding what was written re.. the increase in hormone levels negatively affecting the developement of RA.That was on one of the sites below, and I took it to mean that taking the HRT increased hormone levels which helped to stop the RA progressing?? The site is below anyway see what you think.

Hi Angela, Thanks for the link. I did take the pill over 30 years ago for about 8 years, can't believe that would make any difference to how I am now. Re:HRT if the article is anything to go by I have Hobson's Choice, No RA or increased risk of breast cancer (as said, am high risk so can't take HRT).

Keep up the good work with your research :)!

Hey this is really interesting thanks for posting the site Sally.

I believe there is a test to check our estrogen levels isn't there? I might ask for one.
There might just be a man made nutrient on the market now with caspace-12 in who knows.
Next job "research caspace-12".
The search goes on.
Keep finding the good information to Sally
