Subject: flare up or just making excuses?

hi, just having a moan about my knee which is v painful today and my wrist too. Had to abort a trip to Tate Britain as couldn't get up/down steps at the underground. Feeling grumpy too from enforced confinement in my flat due to cold weather and snow. My studio is very cold and I don't think that is good for inflammatory arthritis. Do you think that is true or am I just making excuses? Also, it takes quite a long time to get there and with this knee ...... I went swimming last night and wonder if that has made things worse. Physios all telling me how good it is for me - huh! Sally

Also, started on MTX this week, feeling tired. Is this normal? Am on low dose 5mg then go up to 7.5 on Monday. Just don't have my usual energy, everything seems like hard work. Sally

hi swimming is good if water warm enough if a bit on cold side can cause as many problems as it helps lol. we do not have central heating and this cold giving me some probs walking on the snow (8inc) causing joints to hurt but getting out helps stop me getting depressed. i have oa? and get a lot of inflimation feet hands knees and right hip so on naproxin for inflimation, hydroxychloroquine sulphate latest tabs ,gluosamine/chond suposed to help joints repair themselves,co-codamol pain meds would not live normal lol with out these.seen rhummy twice so far back in march to see if any better so gone from bit of waer and tear to cripple with out meds not any fun but keep going what else can we do . so when not good under foot we take care stay in if bad but look after each other sorry to ramble on u r not on your own it might only affect your knee from what i have read it also might go into remision so try to keep going things will get better and it does not matter pain is pain and gets u down from time to time

hi Val, I've got inflammatory arthritis, so lots of joints affected but I can't walk very well these past couple of days, very painful. I just feel a bit down as it had been much better. Don't know how you manage without central heating. I don't think I could go back to those days to be honest, it is bad enough that my studio is so cold, makes it difficult to work -also paint (am artist) standing up, it is quite physical as I make very large paintings. You need a bit of strength lol! Will try to go on Monday, though more snow forecast here then. Sally

Hi Sally, think the wather does affect us, simply becos we scrunch our bodies up when cold... we have a Member on here(havnt seen her for a while tho) named Della, she is an amazing Artist, she sells her paintings all over the world, they r incredible, so I do feel for u, it must be a huge struggle...regards swimming, of course if the water is warm (I prefer Hot lol) like Hydro, but they say swimming is goood for the joints, In my Personal opinion, swimming Hurts me, I cant seim without pain in my neck and shoulders, went to portugal last year and we had a huge pool, all I did was exercise in it.... Ipersonally cannot do the swimming movements as i get cramps in feel, and it generally hurts my joints.....maybe im a one off, wonder if others have experienced this.....I prefer to just walk in the water, doing the exercises that the physios showed me when I had Hydro, also the water is so much warmer in the Hosp Hydro pools, and warm when getting out into the drying areas..... take care Sally, Like Val says, be kind to yourself, especially in this rotten albeit beautiful scenery x

hi Jill, My knee is much better today but not my wrist. Think I overdid the swimming and exercises but it was sooo nice to get in the water. It's not too cold as is a leisure pool. I loved the hydro but they unfortunately limited sessions to six.
I feel a bit happier today as managed to get out for a bit and remembered I've got a party to go to tomorrow lol! I wish my moods weren't so up and down but think I am still grieving over my mother too, so that doesn't help when you're are imprisoned in your house by the weather.
how are you these days?

I take 10mg of MTX Monday evenings. For the whole following day I feel tired, tired, tired. Just no energy at all.

By Wednesday afternoon it improves somewhat. I think I'm turning into a lazy old so and so because I find myself putting things off and have to make a real effort to get on with life in general. The Rheumatologist I'm seeing tells me that fatique is one of the symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis.

Its frustrating to say the least.

Hello Shaz,

Yes I have put some weight on. I think its because I've not been as active as normal so the diet has started with a vengeance.

As for side effects I seem to be getting mouth ulcers quite regularly which is something I've not had since I was in my teens. I'm 60 this year. They seem to clear up after a few days with a salt mouthwash, but reoccur fairly frequently. Also noticed that i seem to bruise easily from even the smallest knock. Also on occasions a shortness of breath.

It seems that MTX can take up to six months or more before any improvement is noticeable. Have been told to be patient and try to continue with the medication. So suck it and see I s'pose.

yeah thats about the size of it,i suffered with mouth ulcers as well to start with but they seemed to settle down after few months,i noticed the shortness of breath as well but put that down to having gained a fair bit of wieght and being total unfit now, having gone from working in a warehouse full time to sitting on my bum full time,as for the bruising its hard to tellas being used as a human pin cushion what with fortnightly blood test and weekly mtx injections i always got a bruise but what the heck soppouse its all going to be worth it in the end or thats what i keep telling myself but must admit there as been times when i think was i better off before i started with the mtx anyways you take care lol

Hi Connor, don't mean to scare you but in my leaflet for mtx it says to report to your doc immediately if you have shortness of breath. May be nothing but perhaps worth checking?
