Hi Angela...dont u feel scared ok...I did, but after I realsied they were there to help me, there will be a solicitor(who deals in health issues etc) A Doctor, so thts good, and obviously the DLA person... I took my partner with me, helped so much.... they do repeat questions in sifferent ways, so be careful, but u r an intelligent lady and will see what is what....at end of day, all they want to know is...how r u copin daily...Tell them U R NOT!, tht u have totally readapted yur life to suit the condition.... mention the Meds u r now taking, if they ask "How do U cope when U go out with m8s" say U DONT go out, as in past, u suffered worse nxt day etc...... tell them U cant wash...U use wet wipes, that was so tru in my case, and whne I told them that, I creid, I realised myself how bad I, infact was!! they did beleive me... i got more than prior...... but ive since gotten worse, and about a year after the tribunal, I re applied again, mentioned enbrel and the like, all the surgery that was due(my hips) and I got the top rates.....mind u, im even worse now, than back then.... xrays im not happy with, shown impingement in both shoulders, already had those ops 3 years ago.... neck is agony, discs goling, head feela like ton weight, and putting pressure on my thorasic spine(upper part) si om angry at the mo, feel unwell, and life is a complete and utter strugggle!....... anyway, less about me.....goood luck, and if u want any more Info on the tribunal, just ask me ok.....tell them U dont cook, tell them U dont wear shoes, they ask all these questions like...how do u manage your shoes, I told them I wear flip flops in summer, and slippers in the winter.... and wear pjs all day, as I dont get dresed in day as its hard work.......so U tell em ok.... take care sweetie xxxxxxx

Please do claim it Chaps it does make a heck of a difference. If you cant face the paper work get someone from the citizens advice centre to fill it in for you they are very good. You may get knocked back once or twice thats parr for the course, I think they use that tool to stop us claiming. Be persistasnt and you will get there in the end. Took me quite some time to get thew full benefits. Good luck all

I was denied it at first. I filled in the form myself. When it was denied I went to the Citizens Advice Bureau. They said to take it to tribunal. Which I did and the lovely lady from the CAB accompanied me. They still denied me. Then I had to wait 3 months [ I think ] before I claimed again. But this time I let the lady from the CAB fill it out for me. Bingo I got it then. Even if they deny you - keep at it - you are most definately entitled to this benefit.

Must say the doctor at the tribunal was very hostile. In her report she put that I should consider taking stronger pain killers !! How rude ?

KayJay,

Unfortuneately being nice is not a necessary qualifiction for being a doctor. I question many of these doctors commitment to their profession. They should ask themselves why did they qualify if all they can do is work for Atos Healthcare, an american multinational, and a company I suspect that has not just a profit agenda but like most amercian multinationals a political agenda. The american establishment is paranoid about 'the welfare state', look at the present shambles over health reform in the USA. I am quite sure that ATOS does not want the UK welfare state to survive. They could play a far more profitable role if it did not.

Those of you suggesting that every arthritis sufferer should apply for DLA are quite right and don't take no for an answer. If at first you don't succeed then appeal and if that does not work they reapply and keep doing it. Get all the help that you can from the CAB and any other resource you may have in a particular area. Join the Benefits and Work website, it does not cost a lot and the advice and help is second to none.

Andrew

Andrew another worrying trend coming from across the pond is private Nursing Home care. My Mum has Fronto Temporal Dementia and is in a Nursing home and requires Nursing care 24/7 which she has to pay for herself. We had to sell her house last March to continue paying the £2000+ per month nursing home fees !!

Just a quick reply. That is a terrible situation. I just hope you are not being conned. A lot of people were charged for care which should have been free. I am sure you have everybody's sympathy in these circumstances.

Hi Andrew. Our only recourse is to take it to a specialist solicitor, which we did in Jan 09, the case is now with the health Ombudsman. Will update as and when. BTW if anyone out there is paying for their relatives Nursing care then let me know. We have been fighting this for 3 years now.

Fiona. No it does not go by your earnings and can still be claimed while in work. When filling out the form you have to give the worst senario. I claimed the mobility part because I have to walk with a stick and have to wear an Orthotic ankle brace. And I can only walk very slow. It's a bit dis heartening when the Senior Citizens overtake me on the pavement !! [ I'm 55 ] and I have arthritis in my ankle which makes walking very tiring and difficult. I would advise that you go to the Citizens Advice Bureau for them to go through it with you to fill it out.
