Subject: inflammatory/rheumatoid arthritis and diet

What are the forum's views on diet to control symptoms? I've heard of a couple of people who say they completely control their symptoms through a specialist diet recommended by a nutritionist. I can't find much info on the web apart from usual healthy diet advice but I am going to talk to one person who is doing this next week. I'm a bit skeptical as think if it were that simple you would all be doing it and this forum probably wouldn't exist. Also, I wonder whether controlling the symptoms through diet would prevent the other long term effects of the disease. I would be really interested to hear what everyone thinks and anything you do diet wise to help.

Hi BSK,
Have just posted my story of life with arthritis. If you read it you will find that diet plays a very minor role in combating your arthritis.Do not be diverted from excercising to the max ,avoiding stress and having a positive approach to your R/A.
It can be overcome.

hi there Jill, I agree it is not always possible to stay positive, esp after one knock after another. I always bounce back but it can be v. hard indeed. Esp if you've got other stuff going on (which I have) it's never just one thing otherwise it would be relatively easy to cope. I will have to stay away from alcohol when I go on the Mtx in new year so am enjoying the odd drink now and then in anticipation of a very dry period ahead of me, grrr! Dropped down on the steroids a couple of days ago and can feel the effect in my ankles and wrists.
How are you today?
xx

Hi Jill, sorry to hear you are having such a rotten time. I don't know how you cope with all those ops. My late mum, after her 4th joint replacement, said never again. I am just a baby in terms of this illness and have had enough already! I think you have every right to complain and whinge - you can't stay strong every day and you have to ask for support - isn't that what this forum is for? (lol)

I've reduced my steroids as per rheummy instructions and everything is starting to ache again. Going for a scan today of my liver and gallbladder as have got pain under my ribs. Hope it is nothing serious, keep your fingers crossed for me. Am hoping it is just the steroids but have had raised liver enzymes too. The only good thing is because my hospital can't do my scan in time I get to go to Harley Street today on the NHS and before the six week deadline too! (got to look for the positives lol.)

Hope you are feeling more comfortable today and thanks for the tip re: plonk!

Hi Dennis,

Trina has kindly allowed me to post on the site to appeal to people willing and able to take part in some market research.

We are incredibly keen to speak to people with RA over the age of 60. We want to conduct interviews in relation to a new injecting device. In return for the interviews we will pay a cash incentive of £250 (possibly more for the right people!). Please do get in touch if you are interested and I will tell you more.

Best regards,
George
