Subject: Anyone had a hip op with epidural?
Hi Guys I am going in for my hip replacement soon i went for my pre op assesment the other day and the nurse sugested they may do it with epidural but she said i would also be given something to make me sleep. Any one else had it done this way? rather than with anesthetic. i really dont want to be aware of what is going on.

Hi Jenny, I had a spinal block when I had my hip done last year. I too was very apprehensive about not having a 'general' but it all went just fine. They administered the spinal whilst I sat up on the edge of a trolley. It works immediately... completely numb lower half! They helped me to lay on my side. Entered the theatre next, where I was given a sedative.... next time I woke it was all over:-) They also administer pain relief via the same route after the Op has finished... this lasts for awhile on waking to help make you more comfortable. Extra bonus!

Hi Jackie thanks for your reply Its not sounding so scary now. I had a fear that I was going to be numb in my lower half but not properly asleep. Did you have to get a supportive chair after? I know there can be probs with dislocating. And are you walking well now?

Hi Lisa thankyou for your reply, your mum was very brave, i think if it must be better not to have the effects of aneshtetic, wish I could be as brave but somehow dont think I could, I think they will have to let me sleep through it.

Hi Jenny.... I have had lot ops over the last few years, and its the anesthetic that worries me the most..... If i could be guaranteed that I wont feel a thing(except for the tugging) then I would opt for the one Lisas mum had, id listen to MP3 to, fab I dea....infact Ive got to have fusion of the spine in the not too distant future, I might ask if it could be done that way via epidural......but again somehing I will need to think about properly.....goood luck ok xx ps remind me Jenny, when r u going in?? x

Hi Jill yes was too much happening at the same time once i had made the decision to put the op off for now it took a weight off my shoulders, i explained to the hospital and they said that it was wise to put it off. I was worried about being put to the bottom of a very long list but they said i would nt be and told me to call them once i have settled. so once i find my new home will be able to recover in comfort, better sort new place soon or will be in the travel lodge for christmas!
