Subject: Joint pain and pregnancy

Morning all,
I hope that everyone is well.
I have posted once before i am 28 and have been experiencing pain in multiple joints for a about 5 years. Have had 3 really major flare ups previously and am currently having a really bad one now. After 5 years have finally been given an urgent referral to rhuemy and am seeing him 16/11/09 . The thing is I have just found iam 7 weeks pregnant. Should be a really happy thing as had 2 miscarriages previously, but it is difficult to get excited as I am constantly in pain and worried about what all the meds I was taking until I found out may have done to the baby. Also I know that alot of the diagnostic tests such as xray and mri are now out of the question so am wondering what if anything the rhuemy is going to be able to do now? Has any one had a similar experience ? Also whould like to know how any of you mums out there coped with symptoms during pregancy ? My doc has said I can take paracetamol , but I try to only do so at night so I can get some sleep , in any case it dosent really do much. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :-)

hi sorry u have had this happen, u must not worry as i feel the baby will be ok. u have stopped the meds now so u r doing all u can, some people find there symptoms go away while they r pregnant perhaps u will be one of the lucky ones. as for the rhummy there r blood tests and just examaning u and taking your history will tell them a lot they can keep there eye on u till after the birth and then have the right meds waiting for u. please do not worry if the docs thought there could be a prob with the baby they would have sent u for tests. congratulations it is great news and u must be so happy

I agree with Val...first of all I want to say Congatulations, it is gr8 news.....I know u r worried, that is normal to worry, everytime I was pregnant, my arthritis never bothered me, even my back pain didnt bother me, and I had huge babies, never a pain in my spine, and ive since had a spine op in 2003....anyway basically it seemed my body copes better when pregnant..must be the Hormones thing.....with regards to the Meds u have been taking, i wont lie, I dont know enuff to comment, but Im sure it will be ok...may I ask what type of Meds U have been on that r making U feel so worried? Like Val said, after your baby has been born, they will offer U the best meds to get u thru ok..... in my opinion, and from what ive read in the past, the symtoms of Arthritis get better....so pregnancy is Bearable..... when do u c your Midwife? pls keep us intouch, take care Jill

Hi Val and Jill thanks for the reassurance. Have been taking Naproxen and co-dydramol (lots of it) stopped taking it as soon as I found I was pregnant about 2 weeks ago. My doc said it can increase the risk of miscarriage and I have had 2 before hence the worry. I suppose the fact that I am in so much pain and as a result not really sleeping is not helping my frame of mind. Looking forward to finally seeing the rhuemy and hoping that he will be able to tell me exactly whats wrong, feel like once I know for sure I can better equip myself to deal with it. Once again thanks for the support , big hugs to you both x

Vleigh hi, I can understand your worrry totally, Ive miscarried and also lost a full term baby boy, long b4 all this kicked off....being worried is a scary and frightening ordeal when U r pregnant, if I can help and support u in any way , I will...I beleive once U have seen your rhumy, your frame of mind will get better and U will cope...and altho im not experienced in the meds, I cant see that the ones U did take wld cause any harm...... remember this, mothers that r heroin and drug and alchol addicted, they give birth to babies, so my point to u is.... B POSITIVE, your meds r nowt compared to some mums that have kids.... ones that carry on taking drugs, and smoke all the way thru..... u arnt doing that.... everything will be ok, dont worrry, worry is a negative waste of time...becos U WILL be ok, and so will your gorjus little one.....I know U have pain, but concentrate on those wonderful happy moments when u r gettting bigger and bigger with your baby and having scans and seeing him/her waving at u....Posititvity is EVERYTHING!

take care and always come back and get support, we r here for u...lots love Jill xx
