Subject: Starting a family

Hi all, I've just been diagnoised with RA.
Being a man and having just tied the knot with my partner. We did intially have a conversation about starting a family, this has now certainly changed things with us or has it?
I will soon be going onto methrotrexate too. Can anyone tell me if this is the case to hold off forever or for the next few years? or??

Many thanks for any replies

Hi Tony, congrats on tyong the knot....I would Never allow this to stop U having the family U deserve!...however, women r not allowed to try for a baby while on methtrexate....and if a woman in on it, thye must stay offf it for 6 months before trying..... I wld defffo try Now and then go on Methtrexate..... that I think is the way around having a family for now..... ya never knoe, your lovely wife may fall pregnant immed....in that case u clg begin the MTX ? also having children will bring so much love into both your worlds,... what an amazing reason to stay positive for.... I wld (if I was u) wld try for bby for next few months assuming u r ready to, and then go on Methtrexate....also it takes 3 months to get MTX into your system, helps some of us, and not others....side affects for me r feeling so tired, but then the disease does that too...fatigue is awful....im also on the Biologics Enbrel Imjections weekly....since starting MTX along with enbrel injections(MTX did NOT help me on its own) i have had less flare ups, less pain, not totally pain free. but flare ups dont last as long.....so going on MTX is worth it......but if u want to start your family, at least the first child, I wld do it now, if U can hold offf on that MTX, like i said, takes between 2/3 months for it to kick in anyway!....please come back and tell us what u decide...... its goood to have a nice guy come into the forum, also your wife can too, if ever she needs support..... I have Inflam artharitis, R.A.?? esr goes mental , been up to 97 in past, but then drops down, then goes up again, then drops back etc...yo yo..... treatment is same tho..... anyway goood luck

EEEk sounds nasty....but i guesss worth it, cos the result having kids is the vital thing here....just sounds rather invasive, the meds being flushed out of every hole...think thata what u meant isnt it Phil....anyway well done, cos its well worth it, i think lol

Hi Tony. I'm 39 and was told not to try for any kids at all whilst on meds, one injection i was on i have to wait 2 years after stopping before even trying for a child. I dont know if you like me but all my fathers side of the family has had RA. The best thing to do is have a sit down with your ra spec nurse and get the facts of the meds.
Good luck
Nick
