Subject: recently disgnosed with arthiritis

I have just been disgnosed, via an xray, with arthiritis in my left shoulder. I've just turned 60 and been very healthy up until now. It's so very very painful what would you ladies and gents recommend ? It sounds like some of the drugs make you feel worse than better. Apart from the dull pain in the back of the top of my left arm most of the time and the acute pain when I make some moves with my left arm I am feeling fine.

Hi Sheilagh
You will find lots of people will help you on this site, all have different problems, but all connected to RA or OA. I have OA in neck and back, i have been going to the physio for the last two weeks, because my neck is causing me to have terrible pain in my shoulders and arms. I can hardly move my neck at times, also i am getting pins and needles in my little fingers on my right hand. Going this morning to see physio regarding tens machine see if that will help. Some drugs do help, others can cause more problems, its trial and error where the tabs are concerned, what suits one, will not suit another. I cannot take any NSAIDS because they just make me bad. Anyway what has your gp offered you, are you going back to see the rheumy? Have you tried physio? Will let you know what the tens does for me. I have also heard of the pain pen, it blocks nerve pain also, might enquire about that also. Hope some of this helps, you will get others who will advise you also.

Monica

Hello Sheilagh, I have found that one of those little tens machines you can get from Loyds chemists, they are around £15 helps with my shoulder pain. I use it twice a day and it certainly helps.

HI.I was diagnosed with arthritis on my right knee. The doctor showed me one exercise to strengthen my upper leg, told me to take over the counter pain medication, and told me I could get a steroid injection that would help with the pain for a couple of months. He made it sound like it is not a big deal, but I'm waking up in the middle of the night with pain. I am 52, and otherwise healthy. Is that it? Is there something else I could do? I am very upset after researching the Internet, arthristis sounds like a pretty debilitating illness. My mother in Brazil treated hers with powdered oister shell. Any advise ?

hi isis...ive had steroid injections in my knees....they do help, but as far as the injections that i had, they inject behind the knee cap, so can be painful at the time, but does help for a while....the reason your gp suggested over the counter painkillers like ibubrofen, they r affective if u only have arthritis in one joint, probably just wear and tear, luckily for u, its no where else, or he wld have offered u better painkillers..... like Val says, if they dont work, go back and nag, no one shld be kept awake at nite.

also i think your gp as u say didnt think much of your knee, unfair to u i know, that im sure is becos they see so much other sinister probs with peoiple, or other people with far more serious arthritis issuesm so they kinda dont tkae much notice, like Val said until u keep returning....u need to ask for a rhumatologist appointment....he is the specialist that can tell u what to expect...yes your right about arthritis being a debilitating illness, most of us in here r in that position, but please come back to the forum, its nice to know how u r coping...I cant help with any ideas regards your knee, accept sleep with a pillow under that osre knee.......goood luck ok

take care

Jill
