Subject: Children/nausea/ blood tests

My daughter is nearly 8 and has just started taking Methotrexate for her juvenile arthritis. Does anyone have any tips about helping her to cope with feeling sick at school? So far we have asked that she be allowed to have some 'time out' sitting in the medical room if she feels bad in class. So far it's not been a real problem but do these side effects get worse as treatment goes on? Also I'd appreciate advise on how to deal with the regular blood tests. She screams the place down every time she has a blood test and I find some of the nurses a little unsympathetic, they are usually very busy and rushed. I'm sure the 'magic cream' to numb her arm is not really working - can that be so?! Thanks so much

hi, my 4 year old son has just been diagnosed with arthritis and yesterday i had to take him for a blood test, they put the cream on at 2 o clock and took the blood at 5 o clock. he also screamed the place down and i felt that the cream hadnt worked. his 1st test he had done at a different hospital with no cream and yes he cried but nowhere near as much as yesterday

Hi Karen - just to say that the blood tests have got a little less stressful. The last one was the best yet as the nurse tried really hard to explain to my daughter that she should relax her arm, ie, make it floppy rather than keep it tense and straight. Then she (the nurse) waited until the arm actually was floppy rather than just going for it. Also I'm going in first thing in the morning so there's not too much hanging around which stops her getting too anxious about it. Good luck!

my daughter also has a form of ra. She is 10 and gives herself a shot of methetrexate every week. taking Folic acid by prescription has helped with nausea.
try taking the methatexate at night. That may help.

My 13 year old daughter has been on methatrexate for two years and still feels sick. Dr prescribed antisickness tabs, but GP said it makes it worse. We tend now to give Methatrexate at nighttime, but she still feels nausea. She is on Folic Acid. She gets so stressed about it each week. Wish could find something else.

My Daughter is 2 and even @ that age she is aware of what is going on, i find it less distressing if the cream isnt used as it doesnt make her aware of whats to come.
I don't know about you guys but I am struggling to find any form of support from groups or the internet, any recomendations??

hello the Mums of teh children that are poorly, my son recently had to have some bloods taken at the hospital, they sprayed a cold spray(freeezing) onto the area where blood to be taken, worked within 20 secs, he felt NO PAIN at all, the creams take too long to work, plus its boring waiting around hours, ask about the Sprays, best thin invented for children...goodluck
