Subject: Having the hip op at 50

I found this forum when I was first diagnosed and felt completly gutted when the doc told me I needed a new hip but was too young so the advice was to take painkillers and carry on. It helped to come here and talk about it. I finally got reffered to the consultant and went yesterday, he had a completly different view to the doc and said I could go on the list for the op if I wanted to, he told me that new hips are lasting 15-20 years not 10 as the doc said I should decide if my arthritis ws interferring with my quality of life and make the decision. He has also said I can go for physio now if I want to. So unless I can find an alternative cure for the pain I will have my op after christmas. I dont know how others feel but now should be the best time of my life, kids grown up, more time for myself, just seems like the best thing is to improve my quality of life now while I can enjoy it. Anyone feel the same?

Hi jenny I'm 50 and had my hop replaced in 2004 and have not looked back since. No pain in the hip. Don't walk with a limp anymore. Can take my little dog for walks. No more uncomfortable sitting down. In other words so pleased I had it done. Mine was the old fashioned op to with big scar but mow they do a less intrusive op moreicro surgery so it's even better than what I had. Recovery time lot less to.
Also there is another op called Birmingham cap which is even less invasive and thet can still do two hip revisions after that. But not all Nhs hospitals do it. Check it out on google.
You doc was wrong about length. Of time they last for I was told about twenty years then you can still have another one on same hip well be 90 then. And perhaps something else will be along.

They minght be able to grow us a new hip by then lolol.
Hope this helps. I am so glad I had this op honest. Quality of life so much better. Take care and let us know what you decide. Keep in touch. Xxxxxxxxxxx

Hello jenny the eifes had that operation too she's a lot better off now. She was in terrible pain before. The nurses were lovely. Very nice and cheery took my wife a little time to get back fit because she's got a bad knee that will need doing sometime too. But the hip does not trouble her anymore

Hi Val my pain started 2 years ago and was dismissed for a long time by my doctor but now it is sometimes unbearable and seems to be getting worse very quickly. i feel in no doubt now about having it done cant wait to be "normal" again. the feedback here has helped a lot. Though i do worry that other joints may need attention sometimes i feel stiff all over and specially in my knees. But one step at a time cant wait to get this hip sorted now.hope your hip does not get worse too quickly.

The iPhone is brill best phone I ever had dead easy to use very intuative. Can even send and recurve my emails on it lol.
Using it now cos my computers upstairs and I'm too tired to go up there. Have to do some house work cos I got a visitor this weeken

the hip operation is a scary though but it was the best thing I could have done to get rid of the pain, Also my leg used to go from under me and my back ached cos my posture was out. Plus it was hard to sleep at night so uncomfortable. I can walk more or less normally now. Except I got bad feet and a bit of a wonky knee. Keep posative and keep going is what I say to myself.

Good luck to you. Take care and keep in touch xxxxx

Hi Jenny, ive has Bursa removed off my right hip, and 2nd op they scrapped away the arthritis from right hip, and they repaired a tear in mt right hip lol... I have a ten insh scar from the bursa removal...your Hip op wont be huge like that...as Lynne said, they do less invasive hip ops...my m8 just had that done, its the micro surgery, new hip, and within two days she ws almost over the Op, her recovery was fast, and her like Lynne are over the moon...they were talking about hip resurfacing for me...mb in the future....mean while, im going on the waiting list to have anotehr spine op...fusion this time( had spine op in 2003...but now another disc has gone...so need fusion lol....anyway Jenny, if it helps, im worried too....its natural to feel worried and concerened....Look forward to that Hip.... we promise u, u wont look back

Love Jill x

Hi Jill thankyou for your encouragement, it sounds like you have really gone through the mill. Although i am scared about having an op i just keep thinking that people go through much worse at least it is something that should improve at some point. all the best x

Hi val Iam a bit scared of having the op but know it is for the best, you are right i think if its left too long it can affect other joints when i limp my back hurts too and i put much more pressure on my other leg and my knee.

Subject: newbie with oa in both hips knees and spine

Hi everybody just found this forum and its great to meet people with arther as I seem to be an alien amongst my family and even my gp as they just don't get it. I have suffered with mild oa in both knees for over 20 years just taking over counter painkillers/antiinflams for the flaiups and pain.then around 4 years ago started getting extreme pain in back and having difficulty in walking etc gp refused to do anything about it. As I had private medical insurance paid by my employers he did refer me 4 physio as this was paid 4 privately who in turn referred me to spinal consultant again privately who diagnosed oa in lumber region of back. Upper back degenerative disc and large prolapsed disk. I have been having treatment again privately for 4 years injections in spine, have to have op on back and I have been having increasing pains in groin buttocks back and hips I can hardly walk or do anything and on sick most of time from work going back to gp as I suspected was my hips and he refused me xrays or any investigaio into this and even refused a rfferal 2 a hip specialist priveately and his words were what do u expect him or us to do 4 u this is sciatica and mechanical pain I was gobsmacked and in tears left, I went to my spial surgeon who I'm under privately who did an mri and xray and I have severe oa in both hips with other unexplained imfamation and he as referred me to hip consultant and I see him tomorrow. I've had dla form as cannot see me able 2 go 2 work and am worried that all my treatment and the like so far are with the private med from work I can't see me working there much longer and I will end uo with nothing, my gp does know of severe oa in both hips now but just dishes out painkillers no offer of any further help, I did not know of things such as ot until I ead this forum had 2 buy mt own stick also on the dla form they write to yr gp.I'm soo depressed sorry for ranting but feels good 2 gt it out.

That's good advice from val I would definay dump that GP and get your self a new one. There is no way you should have to pay for private treatment. That's disgusting attitude from your GP. Leaving you in pain like that. Ditch him and get yourself a new one asap. Take care big hugs xx
