Subject: Have you had any reaction to teatree OA or RA
I have diagnosed OA in both of my ankles which means 24hr pain and both ankles almost locked. Some days ago when it was particularly uncomfortable I decided to rub in some oil with the hope that the massage and maybe the oil would make some difference. The oil I had at hand was teatree. I decided to rub it into one ankle only so I would have some idea whether the massage or the oil had any effect. The result was disappointing until the next morning when I found a marked reduction of the pain and a bit more flexibility in both ankles although I had only applied it to one foot. This made me curious and I continued rubbing it on other parts, such as arms that had no pain - the improvement in the ankles has continued. But: 1.This could be a one off or a short lived result. 2. Continued use of Teatree oil may have toxic effects - though my researches have not uncovered much more than the occasional allergic reaction. I know that amongst other things Teatree is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent on the skin, perhaps it may have a systemic effect also? Before I start researching this any further I would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this? If you intend to try: 1. Do a small skin test first to make sure there is no skin reaction. 2. Use about 8-10 drops only and rub in reasonably well into any non-sensitive part of the skin. 3. Effects will take about 4-12 hours. 4. Please state what type of arthritis you have (OA, RA or PA) 5. Are you aware of any side effects? I would be interested in your experience.

I have Sero negative arthritis. I am aware of tea tree oil and have used it many times directly on my skin as I tend to get these little circle like patches of extremely dry skin, they turn up out of nowhere every now and then. My dry skin reacts immediately going red then usually within a couple of days of use they go. I have never tried it on my joints, but will give try and let you know

Hi all do you use pure tea tree oil or dilute it with a base oil. I was told by an aromatherapy person not to use pure oils directly onto the skin as it can cause allergic reactions. I do use a couple of drops in the bath every now and then. But have not used it direct just thought I'd put this out there just in case you have sensitive skin. After all he may be a doctor and be genuine. But we don't know do we. I know I minght be paranoid but we have had a couple of odd bods on here. Better safe than sorry. Take care x

Hi val ?? Has your doc not given you enough meds?? Or is it that they wear off and you can't take anymore. If latter the case your meds aren,t working proper and you may need them changing . Write it all down for your rheumy when you take your tabs. If it helps . How long before they wear off etc hope you feel better soon x

Also val the rheumy usually asks you how long are you stiff in the morning. Worth monitering yourself before then. Cos you forget things on your first visit.

Hi, I am surprised at the number of comments - I am a 'real doctor' but in psychology!. I am sorry if the posting looked mysterious - it was not meant to be. A possible reason for any beneficial effect of Tea tree on OA would be its anti-inflammatory effect.Inflammation is a major source of pain - I was not expecting the oil to have anything other than a local effect. I have stopped using the neat oil for 8 days and the pain is back at a much lower level - I didn't expect otherwise. I am concerned with possible toxicity with internal organs. I want anyone who tries it to be careful and would be very grateful if they report any findings positive or negative. Depending on other's experiences I may or may not follow this up - it may well be just be a one off curiosity.
