Hello, Val, Lynne and J,

Thanks for your replies and for making me feel welcome. I have a meeting with for surgeons at the beginning of August and would like some advice. I have been reading lots about knee fusion and have found mixed reviews.

Thanks again

Yes, Verity, it is fused straight. The leg is permanently straight.

No Jill, the knee cannot bend any more, it is totally straight, no movement at all. The joints surfaces are fully fused.

Hi Jill. Actually I'm fine with my stiff leg. Yes, normally once a fusion is healed, there is absolutely no movement. If you need a fusion at your lumbar region your body maybe able to compensate a bit for the fusion, that might give you the impression of movement, but the actual fused bones don't have any movement. My leg is pain free and I cope well with my straight leg, so it was the right decision!

Hi Malte, if ya pain free, thats all that matters, id do the same if my knee had to be fused...my worry about my spine is that the lst op(dyneses) I had in 2003, took me 8months to recover....the first 4 months was sheeer hell....will c how i feel, seeing surgeon 7th may, c what he says, I will go for it,if no choice, only 3 months waiting list... Malte (nice name) do u suffer in other joints? TC J

Hey Jill, no it was only my right knee affected and the single joint involvement made the decision for fusion easier!

I had my left knee fused 27 year ago and for 17 of those managed very well, worked had three children and walked everywhere. However I now have a great deal of problems in my back where I have twisted it continuously over the years and am now more or less housebound and in constant pain. I used to drive but find in difficult getting in and out because of twisting my back

Hey Jane, sorry about your back issues. But, you had 17 good years. Have you talked to your doc, whether physiotherapy might help your back? As far as I know doctors say, back problems do not necesarily occur after knee fusion, it just happens sometimes. You might also try a cane or walker to relieve your back?
