Hello Del,
I am on sulfasalazine and naproxen, plus others. When taking sulfasalazine you should be drinking plenty of water anyway, as this drug can cause kidney irritation due to the formation of crystals (crystalluria) But I think that it also may be the naproxen that makes you need the loo more, I have noticed that when I need to take a high dose I have to get up in night for the bathroom.

Hello Della
I try very hard to not take any nsaids (such as ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac) they are really not good for your body when taken long term. I also make sure I always take a stomach protector, having the nsaids with a glass of milk or a meal is really not enough when you take them regularly. The dmards have to be taken long term to stop or slow down the destruction of your joints. I certainly know that I do not want endless joint replacement surgeries in later life so I make sure I take my dmards religiously. If you are able to achieve remission you may be able to reduce your dmard dosage and for some people their inflammatory arthritis never really progresses beyond being more than an annoyance! Lucky them, I say.

Hello Della,
I am relatively new to RA and am now on sulfa like yourself and I do go to the loo far more often than I did, but like Emma said I drink a lot more water as advised.
Like Emma also I tend to take the nsaids incosistantly, only the sulfa I am strict on for now. Until I explore all avenues and see if I come up with a management programme better than the Rhummys I will do as I am told. Maybe I will find one, maybe I wont who knows?
I really feel for you being so horribly uncomfortable,it is good to let it out on here like someone said on another post you tend to feel your family get sick of hearing you, I feel mine do a lot and keep my mouth shut these days.
Hope you are having abetter day today.

Just a quickie Della,
I had a swelling on my knee for 8 months before I got it seen to,it felt like i was carrying a bag of concrete around with me horrible it was.
I think it was Jill that suggested contacting my rhummy and getting it asprirated and a steroid shot put in and cor it was heaven the day after, and luckily the swelling has not returned on that knee. Maybe that could help you?

Hi,i am new to this forum but would like to know if anyone has had blood in their urine whilst taking sulfasalazine,i have been on this for 8 months and recently moved and had to change doctors, being a new patient i had to give a urine sample which was found to have blood in,following another test and no infection but really high blood pressure and blood being present I have been referred to hospital for scans and tests incase it could be a tumour, half of me thinks it could be the sulfasalazine but wondered if anyone else has had this happen to them,I would be grateful if someone could reassure me thanks in advance

Hi Moira, I know that sometimes a trace of blood has shown up in my urine and they send it away for checking just to be on the safe side but it has always come back clear. I think the fact that you have high blood pressure they are probably being extra careful as it can affect the kidneys if it doesn't get controlled. I have been on sulphasalazine for 11 years but not sure if this could be responsible. Best to get it checked though, let us know how you get on. take care. x
