Subject: knee pain

Hi

I am new to this forum

I am 30 years old. I felt in 2008 on my knee and the pain started a month later: I couldnāt sleep from the pain. I thought first it is from driving.

Then in late 2008, I did an X-ray for the knee. The report mentionned a chondropathy

I started the treatment:
20 sessions of physiotherapy (Positive but temporary results that last for 1 day)
3 injections of supplasyn
Glucosamine Chondroitin (1500 mg, so far I am in the 2nd month)
Swimming
Weight loss

Honeslty, the pain is hidden. I still feel a weakness in the knee

I met 2 doctors and both told me the same stuff: Sport, strengthen muscles

But no one told me if this can be healed.

So my question here:

Is it curable? Or I should live with it?
The body cannot recover from this disease?

thanks all.

HI Gabriele

I have loss of cartledge in both knees, probs began in 2002/03, had clear out in both knees, wasnt given a particular name, except cartledge loss, but on top of that I have synovial fluid inflamation around the knee joints, also since all this, both my knee caps(patella) are twisted....I was told sports can help the quad muscles, dont think it can repair cartledge tho..lots of people have Osteoarthritis in the joints, Knees, did they mention osteoarthritis...I havnt heard of Chondopaphy, I googled it and it mentions there is a diseae in the cartledge / think thats waht i read, My daughter has Costachronritis patella...means same thing, broken cartledge... I also have cartledge diseaase in my spine, they call that Degenerative Disc Disease...

I would go back to your Consultant and ask more about the name they diagnosed your Knees, Obviously if it gets worse, surely they will offer u replacement Knees, wish I cld have them, but so much has happeend to me, had lots ops last couple years, they are waiting for mine to get worse I think! NHS costs etc... I do hope u get the support u need, doubt mine has helped. wish I cld help more, hoepfully someone on ehre can help u better, strong muscles supporting the Knee is beneficial of course, but does exercising hurt your Knees ? does mine, starts to grate, get terrible pain shooting down the side of my knees, Horrible, becos I cant exercise, my inner quads have weakend thus causing patellla twisting of the caps...doubt mine will recover on its own, becos I have other probs with Arthritis...I would def go back and see a Rhumatologist, what painkillers do u take , if any ? might help if y get decent pain relief

let us know how u get on

take care J

Try to keep at your body mass index or just below and keep a busy fitness regime it does help. I am late 50's and it has worked for me for the last 30 years. Reading your comments you are doing the correct thing. Alternative sat in a wheel chair

Hey Bloggs, when u exercise, doesnt it hurt u? I know exercise is the key, but when joints hurt, I give up, I had my shoulders operated on 2 years ago, and still cant do much with them, even Ironing kicks off Shoulder pain, I use to go to gym 5 years ago, lasted a year after spine op, but then health fell apart, I cant even swim without pain in feet, ankles, knees, neck, and base spine lumber region, swimming for me isnt good, altho they say the fact it helps becos of the weightlessness...for me it hurts, so cant do that either...wish i cld... how do u do it? or do u just work thru the pain ?

also..altho I dont exercise as such, I will never end up in a wheel chair, unless my spine op goes wrong...so your kinda giving Gabriele the wrong message by saying exercise or u might end up in a wheel chair(being kind here, not having a go, honest :)

No its not curable its about slowing progress of the disease. Optimistic view prognosis lots of progress on the drug Cocktails as it develops. As you say Jill you have to 'Listen' to your body and assess the benefits against fatigue/pain. Pulling the car handbrake on causes pain Jill which requires a set amount of Newton/Metres to achieve with a set mass. Aerobic exercise is the key. OK Jill not necessarily a wheel chair but not as active as you could be with this condition.

Hi Gabriele,

Where are you in the UK? I ask because I've had problems with my lower back for YEARS, which has been sorted out in four sessions with a world-class physio in Birmingham. He treats footballers, olympic athletes etc. Literally, gone from unable to walk at times to perfect in three weeks.

It's not cheap but it's not stupidly expensive either (£40 a session, but I think you can have them for £35 if you book a block). If it's a degenerative disease he won't be able to cure it completely, but he may be able to help - I would get him to look at it and see what he thinks if you possibly can.

Let me know if you want the details for him. Best of luck!

Can the cartilage be repaired in a surgical operation?

I have had terrible pain in my knees in the past but now they feel much, much better. However I dont do any exersise apart from housework. The pain seems to have improved so much and I can only assume it is from the medication. The pain has transferred to other parts though such as hips and feet.
