Subject: Hi Lucy Colin

I asked the moderator to remove all the dodgy ads as they had added loads more. They removed us as well I don't remember any of us saying anything Dodgy. LOL

Lucy sorry your visit wasn't very good. Have they discussed with you what may happen after the two weeks is up?
Lucy if I can help with any tips just ask. I am sure the North and South work pretty much the same. (pretty useless as one another)
Joking aside ty to have a good week-end. speak soon

Not sure yet Lois, the social worker was meant to go and see him during last week and she hasn't so not sure what happens come Friday. I don't have much faith in her at all.

That's great, Colin, about getting a new car, well even if it isn't brand new, as long as you can get around in it that's all that matters and the chairs are good, I have one too and also a bed that lifts up too, oh and a higher toiler seat lol.

Lucy you can ask for a new social worker.I changed Mums in March.
They seem to be leaving it a bit late if they intend giving your brother more care time. Maybe you might have to call and just ask what is happening.

I will be calling the social worker during the week, so frustrating when people don't do what they should be doing.

I've been in most of the weekend as not feeling great, i think it's a mixture of the cold and a bit of a flare as feeling so sore.

That's not so good, Colin. I hope you get it cleared up soon and keep using the eye drops.

I'm not feeling good at all today, I'm thinking I may call and ask for a steroid injection. I've had a cold or virus but I think a lot of it is coming from the RA and my ankles are so painful, can barely stand on my feet and shoulders sore too, I honestly think stress triggers this.

How is the weather at your end, Colin, we have had an awfully lot of rain although it's dry at moment but i'm still using a hot water bottle at night and this is June too.

Hi Lucy, just been to see my mum. My hubby is so quiet usually but to-day he lost it big time. My mum hasn't had a shower since she came home last Thursday. She is incontinent let's leave it there. I have never seen him so angry. I have been in touch with her social worker waiting for a call back. They have changed the care company and this one is clearly not working. The better staff have left and not replaced. So standards are dropping.
I am going to see if I can get her moved.

I am not surprised you feel unwell Lucy stress is a big factor for us. I am in trouble this week. This weather doesn't help either.
Take care

Colin your eye sounds really sore I hope they get it sorted for you. All these drugs take there toll on us but what can we do. Take care.

Off for my scan on Saturday. Hoping for good news but is doubtful

That's the same reason that I lost it with the social worker, Lois, and I called today and of course she was out and hasn't bothered to call me back and I am going to see my brother on Friday and I know he will be expecting me to take him home but I have a feeling she will want him to stay there as it will make her job easier and without carers he can't go home. If I had power of attorney it would have made things so much easier.

Hope the scan goes well, what are you getting scanned? I went for one a few weeks ago for osteoporosis and surprisingly it was normal.

Take care and lets pray for some sunshine xx

Hi Lucy, the safeguarding team have got involved because the Paramedics reported she had an untreated back ulcer. Their documentation is below average.
I am waiting for a meeting in the Hope's of her getting a move with more care facilities. I have no idea how long all this is going to take. Between the family we are visiting every other day so that will keep them on their toes.

I am having a spinal scan. I hurt myself trying to get mum out of the car. They suspect another prolapse disc. I am worried because I have had a disc removal before and surgery is the last thing I want.

On a brighter note we have blue skies and a strange yellow circle I think they call it the SUN. This keep care x

Hi Lois,

Sorry to hear that your Mum has a back ulcer, that sounds so sore, poor soul. A lot of the things that are happening are caused by neglect. It's not right that they get away with it.

Oh I hope the scan is normal, I wish I had a magic wand and could wave all the pain away from us all.

After two days of calls and emailing I got an email last night to say she would like him to stay until she has spoken to the mental health doctor as on his last report it was said that he had capacity and this is debatable. I am going to see him today so I hope he is agreeable to that as there is no care plan in place if he goes home. I have booked a hotel for tonight as it will save the drive home tonight and I can see him again tomorrow and hopefully take him out somewhere. The forecast tomorrow looks better.

Have a good weekend

hi Lucy , the words capacity fills me with dread , the hospitals etc just seems to use it to how it suits them , we had problems with my late mother-in-law , they dont care about the carers

it comes down to can he look after himself , & be safe , most things can be set up in a home or flats where there are someone on call , we kept my Mother-in-Law at home to long , she needed 24 hour care & was awake most of the night & only the last three weeks of her life did she go into hospital & home , its very hard on the family looking after them

Hi Colin. You are so right. At the moment I don't know what is going on. The social worker hasn't been in touch so he is still in the care home and to be honest I really can't see him getting home as he is quite confused. I am so disappointed in the care he received at home (I should say lack of care) if the proper care had been on place he may have managed at home but he wasn't being looked after at all. When he was at home he was going out and leaving his door unlocked and the same at bedtime. He wasn't even sure where his light switch was. It is such a worry though. The care home isn't perfect but at least he has people there that are hopefully keeping an eye on him. Hope you are doing ok, Colin x

Hi, well mum is back in hospital she had a fall and the staff left her on the floor 5 hours waiting for an ambulance. They are now wanting to talk with me because I have complained as well.
My mum had a blood transfusion because she was so aenimic. This is what was causing her falls. I saw her later that day and she looked so unwell.
She may be 93 but she deserves to be treated better.
Colin and Lucy it is so hard to be left to deal with the unknown this is the first time I have encountered Dementia and I hope it is the last time.
Lucy good luck with it all.

Hope you get good news with the scan.

I hear we have to get some really warm weather over the next few days. It will make a change and be nice to sit outside.

I had a call today from my brother's friend, he was up visiting him today when the social worker came in, she told him that he will get sent home once they get a new care plan in place for him, that is a worry as he really isn't fit to look after himself, will just have to wait and see what transpires.

twice we was forced by the hospitals to have her home , it is such a commitment to look after someone 24/7 , they did give us three days a week night sitting , but my wife would be up 5am & my son going bed after 3am

Lucy dont wait and see what transpires , you cant trust them , they respond to who shouts the loudest , the work capacity is change to how it suits them , dont offer to have him home , it seems cruel but you would never cope , got yourselfs to think of

Hi Colin, His friend called me today to say that he went to see him at the home today and he wouldn't speak to him, he is very angry that he is still in there and wants home. I called this afternoon and the nurse that I spoke to said he doesn't want to be there so it makes things very difficult now especially when they are saying he has capacity, so he could really leave if he wants to. The social worker seems to be ignoring me, It would be a lot easier for us if he did stay but if he hates it then it seems cruel to leave him there. she hasn't replied to my email and doesn't return calls. I was hoping he would have settled and if not then she would have had a care plan in place for him.

How are things with your Mum, Lois? Any word on your scan? It is a scorcher here today, really warm. I have just stayed between the house and the garden as too warm to do anything else.

AMAZING sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and go to the top.
Not saying all will be straight forward
Lucy you can speak for your brother believe me they will leave you with it. You need to know for his sake what care plan they intend doing. Ring and ask who you can make a complaint to. It is so hard when you love someone to be hard. Lucy my back issue is because I was stupid enough to say I will take her home from hospital. She slipped getting in the car I caught her and new things had gone wrong in back straight away. Still waiting on results.

I am 68 now and feel it lately
We just take on far too much as Colin said and we pay the price.

Colin, My brother has never married and always been on his own and likes his own space so I suppose being in a home is especially hard for him. He has had a few bad falls probably because of alcohol and it may well have contributed to his problems with dementia. I am at my wits end wondering what is best for him and even thought of bringing him to stay with us but after reading your posts I am wondering if this would be taking on too much as we have our own health problems. My husband has Parkinson's disease but it is hard travelling to see him every week and beginning to wonder if it would be better having him here,

Lucy enquire about assisted living. It worked for mum. I guess Scotland would work exactly the same as down south.
He would be allocated somewhere with 24/7
carers on site. He would still be able to retreat to his own space. Mum had a one bedroom purpose built flat with wetroom.
This scheme is co run with local councils. His social worker can help you with this. It can be done. I feel for you so much.
Mum will probably be going next week when she comes out of hospital.

Colin it is a shame your brother retreats from the grandchildren. My mum used to do the same when mine visited. It just got too much for her. I found mum retreating more and more to her room hard but then I realised her bedroom was her sanctuary.

Hi, Colin and Lucy,
I think all the pills make weight gain a nightmare. I came off all my pills and 10lbs came off straight away. I have lost over a stone now. I would like another stone please but I think I might have to work hard for that.

My mum is in a care home being assessed and to-day she had another fall and went to A&E. They asked me to take her there but although I felt bad I said I was out. I just think they need to see that without my input she cannot care for herself.
The hospital called and said she is fine and going home.
I am learning to toughen up otherwise I will be back to square one. I do feel a little bit bad like I am ignoring Mum. I have visited twice she has only been there since last Thursday. I will pop in tomorrow to check on her.

How did your brother get on Lucy.
Hope you and Hubby are feeling better. I will try to blow some better weather your way.

Colin I didn't realise you lived in Cornwall one of my favourite places Devon and Cornwall was always our holiday destination when we were kids. My Dad loved all of it and would of lived there given half the chance.

Hi Colin & Lois,

Surgery is a lot to think about, Colin, I would be trying all other options first, it's hard when you have been on steroids as i'm sure they will have contributed towards it. I went for a wee swim today, I am having problems with my ankles but in the water it was fine, so I will try that and cut down on my wine.

Sorry to hear that your Mum had another fall, Lois, it is hard but I am of the same mind as yourself, I keep telling them that I can't always be there and it does put pressure on you when you have your own things to deal with. We went on Thursday to see him and we took him out for a couple of hours, we went to a hotel for afternoon tea and he got a pint of lager. Yesterday his friend took him to Ayr races, so at least he is getting out and it is a nice home, he has his own room with bathroom and tv and it is a nice big room that he has and in the dining room they have lovely table cloths on the tables, they even have a hairdresser, but he still wants to go home, we are still waiting on the social worker getting the doctor to re-access him regarding capacity, personally I think he would be safer staying there, she certainly isn't rushing for this to be done.

This is the first day in a few weeks that I finally feel as though this virus is lifting. I got an antibiotic prescription but decided to wait and see if it would go on it's own before getting it so hopefully i'm ok now.

Enjoy your days out and about Colin.

hope things improve with your Mum, Lois. xx

My father inlaw was never any problems , he short term memory was very bad & we had to write down how to use the TV , my Mother-in-law was all about her & she could not think of anyone else , we had carers in 3 days a week because she needed around the clock care

Hi Guys, It is so warm here today and seemingly tomorrow has to be even warmer. It's hard trying to sleep as I keep waking up covered in sweat. Oh i'm never happy lol.

Did you manage to get an appointment with your doc, Lois? Imagine calling you to make an appointment then telling you to call back as they didn't have any.

I got a call from the care home yesterday so they have moved my brother to a downstairs bedtoom with access into the gardens, seemingly he is much happier, I haven't seen him since Sunday but was told he was at an art class today so at least things seems better with him now that he has been moved, he didn't like being amongst the bad cases so now he is with ones that are frail.

Take care in the sun and keep hydrated. xx

Hi Lucy,
So glad your brother is settling more. Must be a bit of relief for you.

It is sweltering down here. Hard to keep cool.
I have drs appointment in August. It will be here soon enough.

I have a meeting tomorrow regarding safeguarding the paramedics raised.
Then on Tuesday another meeting at Mums care home to decide where we go from here.
I know what I will be saying she needs to be in full time care.
I will let you know what happen.

Stay safe in this heat everyone.

Hi Lois,

It has been so hot here today again, I am sitting with a fan on beside me. I took my little grand daughter for new shoes today, at least the shops had air conditioning. I shouldn't complain though as the rain is due back at the weekend.

My hips and ankles have been so sore, I have to use my stick now and even that is a struggle to walk.

I hope things go well at the meeting tomorrow, Lois. Your Mum is a good age and probably would be better with full time care, it becomes a big worry when we don't know if they are safe.

Enjoy the nice weather but stay in the shade and plenty fluid. xx

The heat yesterday was unbearable hardly slept for two nights. It is cooler tonight so fingers crossed. My feet are tap dancing on there own I think its the humidity. First time really bad since I dropped the meds. I will need to wait and see if I can stay off meds.

Hi Colin, That's a shame that you are having problems with your mobility. I remember a nurse telling me that those that shout the loudest get, I think you will need to keep at them as it isn't fair that you can't get out. I am having a lot of problems with my ankles too so I know how you must be feeling. When I have been sitting and go to get up that's when I realise how bad they are as they are so painful. You have to keep positive, as new things are coming out all the time.

My husband was trying to arrange some ramps for his sister that lives alone as she can't get her wheelchair into her kitchen or bathroom as she has a few steps into both places and she called yesterday to say she had a fall in house and was waiting on an ambulance (it isn't arthritis that she has) we heard from her son this morning that she has a fractured hip (it was her daughter that died 2 weeks ago) she is 81 so don't know how she will be.

It's been showery here all day, what a difference to last week.

Take care and hope you get something sorted out soon Colin. x

Hi Colin, sorry your still not out and about. It is very true what Lucy said so keep shouting. It is hard to stay positive but we have to. It is a shambles how it takes so long and goes between many before we get the answers. OT also take their time it is just a job to them
Lets hope they are never in our situation . I hope all is sorted soon for you.

Lucy it never rains as they say your husband must be so stressed and his sister such a shame. If its any help a d comfort my mum had a break in her hip and had a replacement . She also fell. She did very well. She did need a lot of after care fortunately she was kept in hospital for most of it. Six weeks in all. Then six weeks at home for showeres and physio.
It has been lovely here today spent it in the garden
Now time for a relax.
Take care

I will probably try and get an appointment with doc tomorrow and go for an x-ray. I started taking tha antibiotics yesterday as they said there were some crackling sounds in my chest. Hi Guys, well I have the results of my CT scan of my spine.
To say shocked at the result is mild. I feel better about it today as I am unable to change it.
I have 5 slipped discs curved spine right at the bottom and OA spurs. The discs in three places are pressing on nerves causing all the pain.
This would be a big operation so for the time being I will be taking Gabapentin to turn off nerve signals if this does not work then we have to have another discussion.
To top it all mum was given funding and then it was taken away her Social Worker is now on a mission. I have told her if this doesn't get sorted and she is sent back to her flat you will be on your own and I will step back totally because I cannot agree with her not being in a care home.

The curve at the bottom is caused through the break down of bone and disc hernia. My Gp is against phydio or any form of manipulation. I will soldier on as we all haave to

It has now been a week since my scan and I was going to call doc today to see if the results were back but I couldn't, I think I am frightened of what the ressults might be. I will give it another day or so and see if the appointment comes in.

Last night I took a terrible rash on my stomach and today I am totally covered in a horrible itchy rash, well it's more like big blotches, so not sure what is causing it although the antibiotics that I finished over a week ago did say to stay out the sun. I have been sitting outside the last couple of days and I did read that they can problems in the sunlight but didn't think since I had finished them it would matter. The itch is driving me mad and covered from the neck down.

Colin, I hope you get some relief soon and if the caliper helps your leg and does some benefit then it will be worth a try. What is the new biologic called?

Hi Lois and Colin, I called the doctors surgery today and was told that the CT Scan showed no abnormalities, I cried when I came off the phone as I was so sure it was lung cancer. I have to go in a few weeks for another x-ray so I'm not sure what caused the bleeding, hopefully just an infection. I just wish I would have called last week as they had the results back on the 27th but I was too frightened to call. Thank you both for your wise words.

I hope you are enjoying your break away, Lois. It's always good to get a change. I hope the weather had been nice for you.

It can be very frustrating trying to lose weight, Colin. Have you been to see a dietician? it is hard especially when you can't get out and about.

I know when I started the rituximab it took around 4 months for it to work. How long have you been on the new biologic? It's definetely worth trying the new brace and hopefully it will help. Try and keep your spirits up as it is very easy to get down with this disease. This may sound silly but I have started drinking a lot of water, I hardly took any before and it seems to have helped. I now keep a glass at the wee table beside me and just keep sipping at it and it can stop me eating so much and seems to help with the RA, unless it's imagination but since drinking more I have felt a bit better.

Take care xx

A bungalow sounds ideal. I would stay if if I had a bungalow.
I feel for Colin it really is about time they sorted help for him
A mobility scooter would be good. I am thinking about one so I can still get around.

They really are taking over the site Lois.

We do have quite a big garden Lois, the only people that I know of that would help do it as a business. My husband does spend a lot of time in the garden but he will say now and again it is gettting too much for him so we probably will have to get some help soon.

We are going to Ayr today to see my brother and staying over for a couple of night, it is a nice bright day here so we will get him to the promenade for a walk and then to a hotel that overlooks the sea for a bite to eat. I still have his house to sort out.

Hope you got on ok at the hospital Colin

Hi Lois, We had a nice time staying in Ayr and when we were coming back on Wednesday we brought him back to stay here for a few days, he went home today so we are not long back. It went well for the first two days and the weather was lovely so he sat in the garden and we had a bbq, but last night for some reason he refused to go to bed so I had to cover him up on the chair, he seemed very confused. I must admit it was hard work and I am exhausted now. It was quite hard taking him back today as I could tell he wanted to come with us.

My ankles are so sore, they are saying the x-ray showed osteo-arthritis so no point going for an infusion at the moment as it is the hip and ankles that are giving me the most bother and neither are related to the RA or so they say.

Hope you are doing alright and have enjoyed the sunshine, the rain is due back here tomorrow.

Take care xx

I can imagine how tired you must feel that was part of the reason I couldn't look after Mum any more.
I saw mum on Thursday she had her hair done in the morning and had her new top on and she seemed really happy
I took her flowers and she was made up. I felt better when I left.
I have OA in my ankles so I really understand how painful it is. My back is so bad I have forgotton the rest of my pains LOL.

The weather has been lovely been in the garden mostly. The rain is due here tomorrow

hi guys , I went to hospital this week , they done a plaster cast of my legs/feet to make some boots to support my ankles , the left one is going over on its self , the valgus kness they dont think they can help that much , to immobilize my leg would make me walk funny & dont think the other joints would stand it , but nice to get out the house I travel in my new car (not driving) but suffered afterwards

Lucy , pleased you had your brother for a few days , its strangee they give a home £700 a week to look after someone but thier family nothing , with my late mother-in-law we made a fuss and got care three nights a week which was cheaper than putting her in a home but still 9 hours a night at £17/hour

as for you ankle/hip strange after 20 years of RA you develop OA (same as my knees) my only advice is dont leave it to long to get them dont , you will develop other problems with skin/circulation damage & other things can go wrong because the way you end up walking

lois , rememmber one day when I & my mother-in-law was both in our local district hospital , called to see her & she had just had her hair cut , she was so pleased , it cost £8 but I endded up paying for her hair cut , but her smile was worth it & to see her happy , it was moment I did not see that often , its hard with a love one suffering , I do feel for both of you , take care

Hi Colin, I hope the boots help your ankle, I remember my mother used to say that when your feet were sore you were all sore and that's how I feel right now. Like yourself I find it hard to believe it's OA in my ankles, I am going to call and see if I can get an injection into them, I rubbed some voltarol into them this morning but need something else. I really struggle putting my feet on the floor when I get out of bed in the morning.

To be honest Colin, I'm not sure if I could have him back to stay as I am shattered now and more sore than ever. He sometimes wet himself and my bathroom floor was forever getting covered in urine. The care home want a meeting this week regarding guardianship, they were meant to sort this out a while ago and this is it just getting done now, I'm now wondering if I should just do it.
They even asked if I could pay the fees to the care home until it's sorted out, i thought that was cheeky.

That's good that your mother seems to be settling, Lois. A hairdo and flowers always cheer me up too.

I went to collect my brother from hospital today and took him back to the care home, he seemed happy to get back. He has a swollen toe, not sure if it's gout, the nurse said she would get the doctor to call in tomorrow to look at it. I can see him getting more and more frail.

We are going away tomorrow to Crieff for an overnight stay for my grand daughter's 4th birthday. It has plenty facilities for the little ones.

Pleased to hear that things are improving for you both.

I cancelled my infusion that was planned for tomorrow as i'm still loaded with this cold, I think I may have to see the doc as I am coughing a lot now.

My brother seems to be sleeping an awfully lot now, when we got there on Sunday he was in such a deep sleep I couldn't waken him so we left and went back on Monday to take him out, I didn't realise that there was such a walk when we got of the ferry and he was exhausted so on the way back we had to get a wheelchair for him. We went to see him again yesterday and again he was asleep but he did waken up this time. I had waited until after lunch before going yesterday and was a bit shocked that they hadn't wakened him up as the lunches were finishing when we went in. I had to go and ask them to get him something to eat. Also his duvet cover was all stained and had been put on inside out and the floor was all sticky. I don't like complaining but I feel I will have to say something when I phone today. Well enough of my moaning. I best make a move and get showered, I'm feeling lazy this morning.

Hi Lois, Yes, you are right. I did call today and said that I was concerned at how sleepy he is and about him missing his meals. They said he gets up at 4am so is tired during the day. I said it would be better if they could encourage him to eat at the right times and was told if he misses his meal they would get him something later if he is hungry. I don't believe they do. He told me yesterday if i hadn't wakened him he would probably have slept all day and that isn't right that he is being left in his room to sleep so long, i feel he should be encouraged to get up.

I have started just turning up at the home too Lois, and he had the same clothes on from the day before, i think he is probably sleeping in them too. I could detect annoyance in the nurses voice today when i called, perhaps I do call too often (usually every other day).

I best get to bed now, it's after 12.30.

Mum has clean clothes on every day and they change her top and all the others if they drop dinner down themselves.

My Mother-in-Law they sent her from the big hospital in Cornwall to a small local onee & then sent her to a care home knowing she only had days to live , her room was 4 walls & a window she could not see out & only big enough to get a bed in

Make a fuss & dont let them push you around , if they think she is getting better OK but dont trust them or there motives & your Mum only has you to stand up for them

Colin I am pretty strong but yesterday I saw Mum and she was crying in pain. The care home were doing everything they could. She has bed sores. They got the Dr to look at her today he gave her a better cream for her skin.
Yesterday I looked up at my younger brother his face told me he wasn't coping
and my daughter looked so sad. I walked away and broke down. The first time I felt I cant cope. I pulled my self together and when they had tucked Mum up in bed I gave her a cuddle.
The carer called me last night to say she slept for hours and they woke her she ate and had a drink. She went bavk to sleep. The phone call was great because I was stressed because Mum refused to eat or drink. So at least I slept a bit.
I am sure they needed the bed but she is being checked every 20 minutes so I think she is getting better care were she is.
The hospitals are so busy I know this but the lack of care for the elderly is a disgrace.

Lois , I have spent a few weeks in hospital over last five years , the treatment of the eldery is disgraceful , if they cant feed themselfs they are going to starve if the dont have relatives to help them
the hospital will make a token effort to feed them but give up at the earliest chance , one man they starved for three days thinking he was going to have a hip opperation & then changing there mind , endded on critical care ward
Its realy had on the family with someone with dementia , you feel helpless some times , your Mum will be better & safer out of hospital which is wrong
take care & make sure you look after yourself

Hi Guys, Sorry to hear about your Mum Lois, I know when my brother was in hospital with a chest infection they didn't care for him the way they should have. They put a catheter in him and the care home were annoyed at them doing that, so perhaps your Mum is better back there. I hope things improve for her soon.

Hope you are managing with the boot, Colin, and hope it is helping, it may take a bit of time getting used to it.

I don't know whether I am coming or going at the moment as I have my little grand daughter staying with me, her Mum is in hospital, but she keeps me going as she is a little chatter box.

We went to see my bother on Sunday and took him out to a hotel for afternoon tea and a wee drink but I can see him deteriorating every time I visit.

Take care xx

The strange thing is my ankle doesn't feel too bad today but it seems to have moved to my shin, I can hardly walk today with the pain up my leg.

Would the optician not call to see you, Colin? I often see advertised that they can make home visits. Hope you get the wheelchair access sorted soon. My sister in law had been moved to a bungalow in a different area but at least she has no steps to contend with now.

I went for my infusion yesterday and told them about the pain going up my leg, they sent for the nurse in charge as the nurse thought it could be cellulitis but I said no it isn't, it does feel hot but not like cellulitis, anyway the head one agreed and the infusion went ahead but the pain in my leg is awful, I can hardly walk, I asked if i could also have a steroid injection but they said because there is a bit in infusion then no. Hi Lois, I called the helpline this morning as I can't go on this way not being able to walk so they said to go in and see a consultant at 1pm, well we went in and it was a trainee doctor and not much help, he took some blood and sent me for an x-ray and then said to go home and come back tomorrow, I asked if he was joking, I said I can hardly walk and he said well I will have to speak to the consultant and see what the blood and x-ray says before we can give you anything. He said he would call me in the morning. I wasn't impressed as it was such an effort to get there and the rain was pelting down and he looked liked he couldn't be bothered and not a good attitude.

We do worry about our kids. My other daughter is away to the hospital tonight with my 11 month grand daughter as she had a very high temperature and called NHS helpline and they sent an ambulance and when she got there they said probably a viral infection and sent her home but this afternoon she wasn't good so she took her to doctor and they have sent her back to the hospital, so a worry waiting here and not being able to be of any help.

I am not ready at all for Christmas this year, with so much going on I could put it off for a month or two lol. I've not managed down to see my brother for almost 3 weeks and don't think he understands how difficult it cam be.

Thank you Lois, I appreciate your reply. I could cry with pain and frustration.
Sorry for the rant. I just can't believe the attitude of them. The nurse was nice and said she will try and locate him but I don't want to see him again, just want to know what to do and don't see why they can't get the results. xx

Hi Lois, Hope you are doing alright. I got the injection into my ankle on Friday but it hasn't helped at all and on top of that I am having stomach problems. I foolishly ate a curry that I had in the fridge that was out of date by a day and have had diarreah since, it's very difficult getting up in the middle of the night when I can hardly walk, this is the 5th day now so hoping it settles soon or i won;t be getting the 2nd infusion this Friday.

We went to see my brother on Sunday and it was such a struggle, we took him out for lunch and on the way back I said to my husband just to take him back in and I would wait in the car, well he was taking ages in getting back and I was sitting frozen, it turned out my brother got stuck in the lift and they couldn't get him out, it took around 40 mins. then that was the lift out of order, their lift seems to break down often so not ideal but luckily he didn't panic and seemed ok when he got out. If it had been off when we arrived I wouldn't have managed to go up the stairs.

It is very difficult Lois. My brother thought he was just in short term and was always asking to get home but he seems to have settled a bit better either that or he has resigned himself to it. I had a call from the care home on Wednesday to say that my brother slapped an little lady on the face, I was shocked, I know the little lady that she was speaking about as she follows my brother all over the place and it annoys him, seemingly they are going to have a meeting about it so I'm hoping that they don't move him.

The crutches are very sore on the hands and shoulder but I was glad of them to go in for the infusion today. The Consultant didn't show up. If no improvement by Monday I will call again

I'm hoping I will manage to get to tesco tomorrow with my daughter and hoping if I'm holding onto the trolley I will manage but actually quite frightened at the thought.

Hope you ok xx

Hi Lucy, i would imagine they do make your hands sore. Could you put foam around the handles? The Consultant no show words fail me.

Mum shouted at another woman to just shut your mouth. She constantly asks Mum whats your name. I take it it was the same thing
Mum just had enough. The staff passed it off and said they get this all the time.
Where were the staff when this happened did they see what happened before he slapped her. I know it cant be allowed but remembering he has dementia and if your brother does something totally out of Character I would be asking why he did this. Was he scared did she invade his space his privacy.
Lucy dont stress if they say they are moving him ask can he be moved nearer to you. Thats if it would be better for you both.
Lucy I feel for you. Hope you managed to get your shopping done.xx

Hi Lois and Colin, Happy New Year and hope it's a good one for everyone...We had a very quiet one, I was so tired that I went into bed before the bells, the first time ever. I am still using the crutches as can't put any weight on my left ankle. Not sure where to go from here as I can't get out far as it's so sore using the crutches. I have an orthotics appointment at end of Jan but can't see that doing much.

Hi Lois and Colin, sorry to hear that your back has been so sore Lois, I hope it's a bit better now. It's not nice being in constant pain.

I haven't been out the house for over a week now as my ankle is still very painful. I bought some more crutches on ebay and they are more comfortable to use. I got a call this morning (Sat) to say that I have to go for an MRI scan on ankle but it could take between 4-6 weeks for an appointment unless there is a cancellation. The doctor left me a prescription for naproxen and tramadol but I am having problems again with stomach so haven't had any today.

It has been very wet and windy here all during the night and today. I haven't been to see my brother for almost two weeks now and they have noro-virus at the care home so they are not allowing visitors in.

Take care xx

Are you going to get a ramp sorted for yourself. If you had a ramp you could get a buggy. They do foldable ones for the boot of the car. Easy for me to say thats assuming the money is feasable.
I have a buggy now I only use it on long days out stately homes antique markets. Hubby used it also when his knee was swollen from oa. They really are great I kicked back to begin with saying i am not that old. Age has nothing to do with it I am glad hubby just went and bought it.

Hi Lois & Colin. I hope the bug clears soon Colin, there is a lot going around at the moment. It will seem strange if you have been used to being upstairs, hopefully things will get easier for you now.

I hope your back is a bit better now Lois. It is hard having constant pain. My ankle feels a bit better although i'm still limping and having to use my stick but it's much improved since a few weeks ago. It could be that the infusion is starting to take effect but then if it's meant to be OA like they said then I wouldn't think it would have made any difference. I don't really agree with them though and think it is the RA (not that it really matters) as pain is pain.

I went to see my brother last Sunday and we took him out but it is getting harder getting him into the car, he is a poor soul, he starts to tell me something then can't remember the words, it must be so frustrating for him.

I had my daughter's wee dog staying for a couple of nights, he is such a lovely wee dog, I would love to get one but wouldn't be sensible the way we both are but lovely having him, every time the advert comes on with the meeercats it reminds me of him, he looks so like them..

Sorry to hear that you Mum isn't so good. Lois, I have noticed that my brother is getting thinner
too. I don't know that they monitor what he eats.

A break away is good and hopefully you will enjoy it. I was at Crieff with my daughter and two grand daughters yesterday, we stayed over night but the weather was awful, heavy rain and strong winds, but it was a change. I was glad to go though as we were having a new boiler fitted and didn't fancy being here when all the work was going on, just left my husband to it. It was free too. I didn't believe it at first when someone came to our door to offer it, as we are pensioners we qualified.

I was surprised to get my appointment for the MRI scan for my ankle so soon and especially when it's next Sunday and at a hospital that I don't usually attend, I won't complain though lol.

Off to bed now...take care xx

I take gabapentin for my back and co-dydramol. I am sitting with my leg up right now I moved awkward today and my hip went and my knee is swollen and painful. I am sure it will sort its self out.

I saw my mum today she was brighter. I can tell you that my Mums food and drink intake is being monitored. You could ask them if it is in place if he is losing weight.

Yes Lois we have the boiler in now and underfloor insulation too, the house seems a lot warmer now. I don't know if it's just in Scotland or all over the UK but if your boiler is over 8 years old and you are on any benefits, i.e pension etc then you qualify, the details are online.

I hope your pain is a bit easier today. I'm going for the scan on Sunday but probably just the arthritis.

My goodness 101 and no walking aids, that's

Hi Lois & Colin, Back in October '18 he was getting ready to go to the Algarve as he did every year and a few days before it he went to the dentist to get a tooth out and then started having hallucinations, he thought people were staying in his house, he ended up in hospital and missed the holiday and they put him on the anti-psychotics for a short time. Now that he is in the care home they put him on them again saying that he was swearing at some of the staff and tried to punch one of the nurses and also hit one of the patients. However on Thursday I got a call from the care home to say that he is sleeping a lot and not eating or drinking much so they called the doctor in and they have reduced them, I told them I didn't like him on them but they said he gets very agitated without them. In my opinion it is to make their job easier. x

Lucy, they are supposed to be trained care staff and should know how to calm your brother. My Mum has been nasty at times it comes with the illness. If he did threaten a staff member she should have removed her self. The carer my mum said she didnt like are best of friends again.
Those meds are just awful and are not necessary unless he has been violent.
Hallucinating in dementia patients is usually a sign of infection.
Where were the staff when he hit a patient.
If he appears to be better with less meds then they should take him off of them.
Lucy it is so hard .

I believe this could be the answer better than drugs. The staff then could monitor where he was going and if he was confused they could guide him back to his room.
They do this for mum because she had a bad fall.
It works well for the staff. Maybe you could suggest it.
I like you don't believe drugs are the answer.

Hi Lois, He does have a mat that sits under his bed and at bedtime they put it at the side of his bed and it lets then know when he leaves his room but during the day he is allowed to wander around although at times he tries to get onto the lift and then he is usually stopped before he gets on it. Most of the bedroom doors are left open so it is easy for someone to wonder into the wrong bedroom and he thought someone was in his bed. I called today and they are going to do some blood tests to see if there is any reason for his behaviour, perhaps an infection.

Hi Lois & Colin, We were meant to get snow today but so far just a bit sleet. I had my appointment with the consultant this morning and he said I need an ankle replacement so he has put me on the waiting list. I asked about fusion but he said it wouldn't hold with the state of the ankle and he said the bone on my shin would probably break again without getting a new ankle and he thinks that's why it broke. I didn't fall just jumped up one day from my chair and felt a terrible pain and he said that sometimes that's all it takes. Oh and by the way Colin, it is RA and not OA, and the rheumatology kept saying it was OA,

I am the same with things here Colin, I could do with a big clear out. I sometimes put things on ebay but I feel it is a lot of bother now, having to parcel and a trip to the post office etc. I have found Gumtree good and people collect the items.

His friend will be back from America mid April and has been keeping in touch with me, he said he will take him out every day when he gets back, he lives in the States during the winter. I have noticed a big deterioration in him this last month or two so just hope he will be fit to get out with him.
I had an orthotics appointment today so they have made me new insoles as with the hip i have one leg shorter than the other, so far they feel good. I have Rheumatology tomorrow, fed up with hospitals and definitely not looking forward to the ankle replacement, actually thinking twice about it as now that the shin has healed it is now bearable but he did say it could happen again if i don't get it done.

Hope you are doing ok xx

Thats good the insoles help you. When the op is here you will be glad to get it over with.

Colin, glad to hear you have been out again. Wish you luck with losing weight I am on a bit of a diet again constant battle. I need to loose a stone not easy when mobility is limited. I will do it then watch as it creeps back on again.

Hi Colin,
That's good that you are getting out now and when the warmer weather comes you will get the benefit. Today was almost like a spring day here, I even got some washing out. I could do with losing some weight too Colin.

That's good that your Mum has settled Lois and that she is happy there, it makes a difference to see them happy. Yes, his friend has been great, he thinks his wife is in the early stages of dementia too, perhaps because people are living longer but I don't remember anyone with it when I was young, perhaps just never knew about it then. Now we have coronvirus as well, I think I will hide on a wee Island away from everything lol xx

Hi lucy you did make me laugh Corona virus to top it all. I do think this is a bit over the top. The goverment doesn't help with the panic tactic. Sainsburys was out of all hand wash and sanitizer. WHY did no one wash their hands before.

I think dementia is becoming more talked about openly now. I only found out about a year ago my Mums Mum had dementia also. Family secrets. My Dads brother in law had early onset dementia. I dont remember that either. I thought he just passed young.

I was reading about people that have early onset dementia it is on the rise. There are so many different types. I don't know what to say about it. It is all complex.
You are right I wasn't aware of dementia either.

On a lighter note take care x

Hi Colin, sorry your back on antibiotics again. Cellulitis might be the better option. Corona virus doesnt sound good at all but no good worrying about it. No I am not panic buying either. Our Tesco was half empty I cannot get my head around it all.
Good to hear you will be getting a comfortable bed. Looks like things are going in the right direction for you.

All good here Mum still happy. It is so cold here today. My son popped in and he was saying its freezing unlike him to complain about the cold.
Best wshes to you Colin and of course to Mrs Colin.

Lois, When I was at tesco the other day they had a board outside listing the items that were rationed, don't know why they buying so many toilet rolls unless they thinking of hibernating.

Had so much rain here it is becoming depressing, we had one decent day and I was hoping we were getting an early spring but no such luck. I see my daffodils coming through too.

Mums care home is in lockdown no visitors allowed. I feel sad for them all how do you make them understand why their families are not visiting? It is the right thing to do. I am hoping they will allow us to pass over Mothers day Cards and gifts.

My back is so painful I was hopeful this rain would stop and the wind. I think sunshine would be the thing we all need right now. Maybe thats in.lockdown as well lol.

Hi Colin, they shut the care home down under managements rule. I don't know how they are going to make my Mum understand why she isn't getting any visitors. She has three visits a week from me and my two brothers. I feel so sorry for her. Next Sunday is Mothers Day and I will be taking her card and gift for them to pass to her.

I don't blame you staying home. We only go out if we have to. My back is becoming a real issue I have 5 discs bulging and they are pushing on some of the nerves. If i move the wrong way it is like torture. They are not going to operate as the operation is major. To be honest I looked on the internet and I am not up for it either. So I will just keep taking the meds.

Enough about me I hope you are doing a bit better have you got your bed yet?

Hi Lois, I hope your back is a bit easier now, have you put your hot water bottle against it. We do all need some sunshine, no wonder so many of us are short of vitamin D. I was intending going to visit my brother tomorrow but as the home is closed that isn't possible. I had a call from the unit manager this afternoon to say that they are reducing his anti-psychotics, seemingly they were told that they could have been attributing to his behaviour. I am pleased about that, a coincidence that I called his doctor last week about this also he has lost half a stone in a month, I am not surprised as he often slept through meal times and I told the doctor that, now they are going to monitor this. He said he was asking if i was visiting today, I just hope he understands why I am not. I am going to send a wee parcel to him on Monday with his chocolate etc.

This virus is becoming a bit scary now, I see a fight to ALicante was turned back to Glasgow today, how disappointing that must have been for them.

Take care and hope you both have plenty toilet rolls lol xx

Hi Lois & Colin, This isn't a nice time at all for any of us. Are you staying home and isolating? I have been out a few times but it is worrying me now so have decided I will try and stay home now. The difficulty is that my daughter that lives round the corner comes every day and not sure whether she should be. This panic buying is sickening, empty shelves in Tesco. I did an online shop but the delivery dates are about two weeks away.

Off to bed now, I find it tiring even although i'm not doing very much. xx

Hi Lucy, we should be isolating but when not any of the large food stores have delivery slots for weeks what are we meant to do starve. We have to shop for the essentials soon no choice. It is all well and good saying isolate if you are over 70 and have health issues as long as you have things in place for us. We both need our prescriptions monthly but guess what no delivery service in this area.
My daughter and sons are staying away although they are all pretty upset by it.
Life is going to be a challenge for some time yet.

I am worried my poor Mum will not have a clue who we are at the end of all this. I have set up sype so I can call and chat with her not sure how this will go. The care home are trying hard. Sad times.

Lucy Colin stay safe xx

Hi Lois, I had to say to my daughter yesterday not to come as it is a big worry and felt bad telling her that. Did you manage to get speaking to your Mum yesterday on the phone? I called the care home on Saturday and asked to speak to my brother but he didn't say anything, i heard the nurse telling him to hold the phone up to his ear but he didn't reply to anything I said, he will be thinking I have deserted him. I'm not sure about skype, I must ask my daughter how to do that. I know from facebook I can call her and see her but not sure if that is skype or not. The situation is awful. I have my little grand daughter living with us and hard when we can't get out.
It is dreadful this shopping situation, I went with my daughter on Friday and was sorry I did, hardly anything in the shop that I wanted and so many people, I must admit it did scare me and I couldn't get out quick enough. Now I am trying not to go out unless absolutely necessary, like you said the online shop is hard to get and then they delete half of the things.

Take care and stay safe xx

Hi Lucy, I know it is awful telling the kids they have to stay away. I got a text message from my GP saying I have to isolate from today for 12 weeks. We just have to do what they say and stay safe.
I didn't realise your granddaughter lived with you I bet it is hard keeping her amused. Bless her the young ones must be so confused and for the ones that kind of understand it must be scary for them.
I am worried to say the least.
I am ringing the nursing home tomorrow to sort out when I can Skype. I am not sure if Mum will understand it but I willet you know. Your brother sounds confused about it all. I have a feeling my Mum will be the same.
The shopping is a joke for goodness sake what is wrong with every one.
Lets hope it will settle soon.

Hi Lois, Just thought I would let you know that I called the care home and they are setting up Skype although I haven't a clue about it, they said if I get it then I can book a slot. Have you managed to do it and is it free and easy to set up? I'm not the best at these things and I can't have my daughter in to show me. I called this afternoon and he passed the office when I was on the phone and the nurse took the phone to him and he managed to say hello and then started crying, I feel so bad for him. My blood pressure has got so high, I am not on pills for it but been testing it at home and sometimes it's over 180 at the top and then at other times it's 145 so it does vary but think I should probably call doctor and see if they will leave a prescription as I don't want to go there with all this corona virus. Hope you are well xx

Hi Lucy I am glad to hear they have set up skype. I am having my first chat with Mum thursday afternoon. It is easy to use had a test run with my daughter she set up skype so we could face to face chat.It is a bit nicer than a text or phone call. Maybe your daughter could set it up and chat with you. Sorry your brother got upset it is so hard I feel for you as I know it is a diffucult situation for us.

The local garden centre has sent all their Orchards and potted plants to Mums nursing home to cheer the place up the care home put it on their facebook page. The building looks amazing. This kind of gesture is what this country needs more of.

I take a small dose blood pressure pill as I have pain related blood pressure. I had to wear ablood pressure cuff at home for 24 hours and my blood pressure was spiking in my sleep. It has touch wood stayed perfect.

Take care Lucy best wishes to all of your family x

That was a lovely gesture Lois, Your Mum will appreciate that. A neighbour left some daffodils on my gate today with a card hoping that we are all well. People can be so nice. I haven't been out since Saturday and no plans to. My middle daughter seems to be able to get slots for shopping easier than I can so she has ordered a delivery for me and it comes tomorrow, I just hope they said most of the items that I asked for.

I called the doctors today and she called me back and said to keep all the readings of BP for the next two weeks then they will see if I need pills, they are only doing telephone appointments which I was happy with as I don't want to go anywhere at moment. Are you isolating or do you still go our for some air? I'm so glad I have a garden, imagine being in some of the warmer countries and stuck indoors all the time. Take care and stay safe xx

What a lovely neighbour you have.
Glad your shopping all sorted.
I am the same not going out I have to isolate for 12 weeks letter from gp all the different bits wrong with me hubby the same. My daughter and my eldest son will pick my medication up and do any shopping we need no slots here at the moment. My youngest son is self isolating as he has asthma. Well i hope he is.
We have a large back garden so i class myself fortunate like you.
I ordered bulbs and seedling plants to bring on in the greenhouse most have arrived so at least i have something to do and the garden will be pretty.
Our drs also telephone appointments. At least they did call you back. You will have peace of mind once you get blood pressure sorted it could be just stress.

I was tempted to go out tomorrow for a few things but my daughter is adamant that I stay in, but things like milk and bread are needed every few days. Usually I see a lot of cars and people walking at the park beside me but today just a few dog walkers. I just hope we don't get as bad as Italy and Spain. I am grateful that my daughter is back from Spain as she is the one that gets most of our supplies in but she left it at front door tonight as doesn't want to risk coming in. Hi Lucy, your daughter is right. Leaving at the front my daughter will do the same. It is really weird our little village is usually busy but apart from the farmers no one is out. Hopefully we wont get as bad as Spain and Italy. Worrying times.

We are trying to keep busy in the garden. We are painting the summer house. All the jobs we have been avoiding are getting done. 12 weeks is a long time to stay in but we will all manage I am sure of that.

I skyped Mum yesterday the conversation to begin with was just all over the place. The she began to settle a bit told me what lunch they all had. That she was happy and I don't need to worry she is ok. She had had her hair done in the morning and her nails painted. At the end she waved goodbye blew me kisses told me she loved me. I told her the same. Then when we cut off I was glad to see she was ok but I just cried. I do miss our visits.

Stay safe xx

Hi Lois, Hope you are well and staying safe. That's good that you are getting out into the garden. At least the weather was a bit brighter today and I managed to get a washing out and it even dried, and the nights will be lighter for longer now.

That is great that you managed to get your Mum on skype and what a relief for you knowing she is happy and managing to get hair hair done and nails, more than we can get done lol. I downloaded it or so I thought and then it said that I didn't have the facility or something to get it, I don't think my brother would have been able to understand it anyway but I was quite disappointed. A very difficult time for everyone.

My daughter was saying the girl that lives below her had a party on Friday night, I thought that so selfish, you always get one.

I's strange seeing the village so quiet, I have a park beside me and no one except the occasional dog walker is in it now and no cars parked in my road now which is nice, they seem to park there then go and get the bus across the road into town when they are working.

Keep well xx
