Subject: new to this!

Hi all just been diagnosed with inflammatory RA. Been in severe pain in hands knees, soles of feet and general pain around body. Am waiting to get results of blood tests to see what meds \i can have and meantime am on steroids and co-codamol. these ease pain but it is still there. I find useless hands so hard to cope with. Any advice would be gratefully recieved. Have been in so much pain for the last 3 and half years.

Hi Carol , they giving you any anti-inflammatory drugs , are they checking for rheumatiod arthritis , are you joints red & hot ? , I had RA since 1996 but the treatment is so much better now & they will fast track you onto the meds ,

steriods will help but long term is not the answer because of the side effects , hope they get you better soon

Hello Carol, sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I was diagnosed with RA way back in 1999 but can remember very well how difficult acceptance was, and also trying to work out how to balance accepting it vs. hoping/fighting for improvement. I hope whatever treatment you/the docs decide on is helpful for you and you can keep as mobile as possible.

To the extent that movement becomes more limited, you kind of work it out over time, you maybe do things more slowly, differently, try not to stab yourself with knives or scissors when attacking lids/cartons etc that just won't open [been there, got the T-shirt...] And I suppose, over time, try to stop comparing how things are now with how they were before you developed the condition, and especially with how easily other people can do things. And give yourself a break...

All the best and I hope when the blood test results come back they put you on an effective treatment that helps you.

thanks Colin and River. Grateful for your support and advice. Next app with rheumy is 20th Feb so am hoping the steroid injection I got at my assessment will keep the inflammation at bay till then. Have got some splints and they do help with pain in hands. I do so hope they can sort them out so I can drive again.
