Subject: methotrexate dosage

Hi, I have been started on methotrexate for RA and I am to increase to 20mg. is there a chance that a lower dose may suit me, just wondered how rheumatologist establishes your dose going forward?

I often wonder the same thing Carole. RA is such a variable disease and some have it much milder than others. They seem to try and get people up to the 25mg or thereabouts as they say it prevents the joints being damaged.

Hi Carole, I should have said in the above post that it "helps" to prevent joints being damaged instead of saying it does prevent it. You could speak to the doctor or nurse and ask if you can stay on a lower dose. There are other drugs that they can give you if it doesn't agree with you. I don't take it if I have a cold and it shouldn't make any difference missing it now and again.

I was told by my consultant that 20mg is the normal dose of MTX that they build you up to at first. If your RA settles down and is OK for a year they may reduce it, they did with me anyway.
