Subject: Neck arthritis

Hi. I'm 31 and have been diagnosed with mild arthritis of the neck. Through the day the pain is mild, however on an evening it worsens. I also have a burning sensation across the shoulders and upper back and pain in the top half of my spine. Anyone know why this is? Thank you.

Hi Jay, it is normal for the pain to be worse at night. We put our bodies through so much during the day and we become tired and the pain becomes magnified.
Do you have any pain meds? Try a hot water bottle or a neck wheat bag heated in the microwave. Make sure you have a good supporting pillow.
There is home exercise you could try you could google some.
Arthritis is a painful disease and it is trial and error that we learn to avoid aggravating the joints.
I hope this helps you. Take care and good luck with it all.

Thank you for replying. I shall try those suggestions and see how I get on. It's a bit trial and error at the moment, but hopefully I'll soon be able to mange the pain better soon. Take care.

Hello Jay
It has helped me when neck arthritis causes me to not be able to look up high without dizziness occurring, to have a small step stool handy.
My GP says it's arthritis not positional vertigo.
I have found that treating it with some caution helps a little. High up shelves in supermarkets are a nightmare!

Hi, out of interest what do you do for a living? I'm an office worker and get exactly the same pains in the same places. The best thing I find is regular breaks and adjusting position, if you are doing something more strenuous then can imagine it is even worse. I have an orthopedic chair with lumbar support and it does help compared to normal chairs. I'm 32 and have arthritis for around 6 years.

Hi. Thank you for your advice. I have found that looking up causes lightheadedness. I think it's a case of thinking before I do something and remembering limitations. It's all relatively new to me so it's just knowing what triggers it or makes it worse. Take care.

Hi James. I'm a teacher so it's a mixture of sitting and standing all day. I tend to find its later in the day and at night that I have more pain and discomfort. Thanks for the advice re chairs. Im sure at some point that the way I sit will start to have an effect so it's something I will look into so that I am prepared. Many thanks.
Take care

I find massage helps. If you can't get anyone to massage your shoulders then you can buy a massager. I have one that I bought online and it really does help. Stress can make it worse. I also find swimming helps.
