Subject: Rheumatoid Arthritis in 65+?
Hi, I'm a University student and am researching Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was wondering how this condition can affect people 65 or above mentally, physically, and what everyday tasks they would struggle with. If you or know of someone with this condition it would be very helpful to know from their perspective.
Thanks

Rheumatoid arthritis is not an age related disease. Children succumb to this hideous illness too. Everyday on TV , cancer research ads are aired. Where is the media coverage for RA ? RA destroys lives too.

I know it's not an age related disease, I'm just asking how it affects them mentally, physically, and what everyday chores they struggle with. The assignment I'm studying focuses on older adults 65+. I've decided to research RA and how it can affect them then from the research, design a product that benefits them. Sorry didn't mean to offend anyone by this

No offence taken Ross. RA makes it difficult for so many reasons. Gripping causes hand pain. Walking to far causes foot pain. It also causes constant tiredness. It does certainly have an affect mentally as at times it makes me personally feel stressed that simple things have become such a chore and constantly asking some one else to do it. Opening jars and cans is beyond me now. It is good that young people get involved in any form of help for debilitating illnesses. People do think all arthritis is the same and every one will get it when they become older. If there is anything else I can help with just post again. I hope maybe some others will come forward with some replies for you. Take care and good luck with the project.

Appreciated lois, you've helped me massively. I understand it would be very stressful living with the condition and have sympathy for anyone who suffers from it. I'll take in what you've said and apply it my product I will design in the future. No offence taken, Thanks again

Ross, the youngest case I know of RA is in someone who was diagnosed at 10 months! When RA is bad it can affect people with equal venom, no matter what the age. The differences with an older person is that they are more likely to suffer, and that unless they strategically take good cardio-exercise then the RA can take over their life. In later life many people with RA have related complications, eg osteoporosis. (Personally I attribute OsteoP down to dairy.) Consequent of both lack of good exercise and OsteoP is a likeleyhood of falling, which may lead to broken bones, and so on...
