Subject: Rheumatoid arthritis and Alcohol

I remember reading that most people with RA don't drink alcohol. I was diagnosed with RA many years ago and that was one of the questions that I was asked at my first appointment at hospital. I very seldom took alcohol back then, perhaps once a year the odd glass of wine. Well over the last year or so I have reduced some of my medication as I am now on a biologic drug and I have started taking a few drinks each day and I have never felt better (it's ok to have alcohol with the drug i'm on}. I would be interested to hear what others think about alcohol and RA and whether most RA sufferers are teetotal. I am not suggesting for one minute that you should take alcohol along with the drugs that can cause liver damage but I do wonder if reducing some of them and taking a drink instead would be more beneficial.

hi , its is advise to cut out alcohol when on drugs like methotrexate but you can still have some but check with your rheumy nurse

with monthly blood test it will , it will show up any problem with raised ALT results , the test measures the amount of this enzyme in the blood. ALT is found mainly in the liver,

Hi Colin, I agree when on mtx it's best not to drink alcohol. I'm interested to know if people when diagnosed with RA were teetotal or like myself very rarely had any and if this is the case could there be something in alcohol that helps stops RA (probably not) just a thought.

Hi JC - RA in research is linked to autoimmunity as a result of cross reaction to 2 gut bacteria.

1) Proteus Mirabilis
2) E-Coli

My own autoimmune arthritis (Ankylosing Spondylitis) is very strongly linked to gut bacteria too.

There's an interesting debate about alcohol on this forum - apparently Chardonnay can kill E Coli... :)

I can take a limited amount of GF-beers, white wine and bubbly as an occasional treat with no side-effects.

The "red" in red-wine is supposed to have anti-inflammatory benefits. But last two times I tried it I reacted so badly RA wise I am not likely to try red wine again.

Whatever I would limit any alcohol intake, and especially keep away from spirits except on the rarest of occasions.
