Hi Joyce, I am about to start using Paquanil and was told that it could effect eyes in some cases. If you have used this drug for a while have you noticed any problem yet?? Pl. let me know. Good luck with your health.

Hi I have worked in the Regional Rheumatology Unit in Leeds as a Staff Nurse for 12 years and have wide experience with the use of this drug. It is known as a DMARD ( disease modifying anti rheumatic drug. It is often used in combination with other DMARDS. Regular blood and eye tests are required but I have personally not seen many problems with its use. It was and still is used as a anti malarial tablet.

Hi Joyce I have had Palindromic Rheumatism for 6 years but have this week been diagnosed with RA. I have taken two courses of Plaquenil. The first being 2 years ago, having to stop it because of severe eye pain. I have recently started it again 2 months ago. This time starting at half a tablet (100mg) daily then increasing gradually to half a tablet 3 times daily. This has helped to minimised side effects. Unfortuately I have just had an eye test and photographs showed that I have fluid leakage at the back of my right eye. Not sure if it's linked to Plaquenil. Will have to keep an open mind until I see an Opthalmologist at the end of January. If it's connected, maybe I have just fallen unlucky because I do believe it is the DMARD with mildest side effects. I am very sensitive to many meds and have severe allergies to some. Can't take anti-inflamms at all.

I was on plaquenil for about 2 years along with imuran and prednisone. I am off plaquenil and prednisone. I did get a spiral fx of my left hip and torn muscles. The Dr. said it was from prednisone so I was tapered off of it. I never had any problems with my eyes and my lab work which I have every 3 months because of the imuran. But I have chronic pain daily.
