Subject: New symptoms
Hi, have been told I have the start of arthritis in my hands; pain worse in my thumb joint at the base. I want to try and stop it getting worse through diet. Can anyone advise me on what /what not to eat? Also has anyone tried acupuncture? Thank you

Aprilflower , would advise you try a anti-inflammatory gel like voltoral , it will help as for diet , never found anything that makes it better , cod liver oil will help , some foods do cause problems but it varies from person to person , ie: fruit (apples , oranges , grapes , tomatoes , nightshade veg , red meat , some have problems with milk/dairy & glutin hot & cold compress will help joints , acupuncture does help but found it only last a few days , it could be anything causing problems with your joints but if it is RA it will develop in other joints & maybe at some point go to your GP to have it checked out

Depends what kind of arthritis that you have, there are over 200 different types seemingly. If it is OA then as Colin has said fish oil might help, it can also help with RA. Perhaps wearing a splint or support on your hands when they are sore might help.

Thank you Colin W and Lucy for your reply. I had a blood test for RA; it wasn't that. They just said arthritis. I've been eating a lot of fruit recently especially tomatoes and it's certainly been more painful. Will cut down on the fruit and tomatoes and see what happens.

Hi Crystal - arthritis is an errant response to a foreign protein where the body creates antibodies against the foreign protein but creates antibodies that are not specific enough to just attack the foreign protein (thus leaving self antibodies). Asparagus contains a form of Lipid Transfer Protein, a group of proteins that can cause allergic reactions and delay immune response. It is a matter of trial and error (try elimination diet or the Autoimmune protocol diet) - and using foods that you know you react to as a link to others as proteins are shared amongst food groups. For example peaches have a very reactive Lipid Transfer Protein.
