hi Margaret
it varies from consultant to consultant , some will tell you to take over the counter strength which is about 1/12 of the 5mg we take

I had been on methotrexate for 18 years & stopped at moment because of long term damage to my liver but took 5mg six days a week for last ten years , my hair has thickened up again & the problems I always had with raised ALT stopped & went back to normal , so would recommend taking higher dose of folic acid

Hi Margaret, I only take 5mg 3 days after the mtx. although I only take 10mg of mtx. I've read not to take it on same day as mtx

Colin is right, Margaret, we are not usually prescribed folic acid when we are on sulphasalazine. It was only when I went onto methx that it was prescribed. They give folic acid to us as it helps to reduce the side effects that mtx can cause and as mthx lowers the immune system it can make us more prone to infections and when that happens we can get mouth ulcers etc the folic acid is meant to help it.

ps. perhaps some doctors give folic acid out for sulphasalazine but I was never told by anyone to take it while on sulphasalazine. Are you in the UK, Margaret? I'm wondering if it could be different rules for different places. x
