Subject: Lack of sleep due to RA pain

I have been on plaquenil for 5 years, getting by for the most part. Recently the pain has become unbearable...not sleeping as I can not sleep on right side from pain in my shoulder. I have started my first dose of methotrexate (I was avoiding it for sooo long due to being so scared to take it). I am 41 years old, female and am hoping to hear people's stories about methotrexate and experiences with side effects. My first dose went well but i don't think the first dose would make you feel yucky yet??? The pain has not stopped yet and i am taking advil at ludicrous amounts to try to help. :( feeling scared. Thanks.

hi Shae ,
had taken Mtx from 1998 , folic acid will help with most the side effects , it varies from consultant to consultant how much they give you , I was taking 5mg six days a week , MTX will take a few weeks to start to work

as for shoulder , I use volarol gel on joints playing up , you can get it from your GP or in the chemist , I cant take the anti-inflammatory drugs but can use the gels

Thanks Colin. Are you no longer on mtx? I have used volerin but it didsn't work that well for me last year. I am taking lots of Advil which probably isn't that good for my stomach ? Just trying to get by until the mtx kicks in. I am going to give the volerin gel a try again the next few nights - maybe it will work better. Thanks for the advice. Are you taking other meds?

Can you have a steroid injection tide you over? It's what I do.

Thanks Sabine. I have had one in my elbow about 3 months ago and it is slowly coming back in swelling. They don't want to inject in the shoulder until after my ultrasound as it could be a tear in the rotator cuff? I seem to be sore in my shoulder, elbow, wrists this past month. I think it is all just catching up to me :( Again, i am really nervous about mtx but i also can't live this way.

I was thinking about a depo medrone injection, the systemic steroid injection.
