Subject: What next? Any suggestions?
Hi everyone,After bad reactions to sulfa I've been on mtx for 15 weeks over which time my liver ALT results have risen from 35 to 89 and may be still rising. I see the specialist in 2 weeks and if he suggests I should change to a different drug, does anyone know what he might suggest and which might be least harmful? I'd like to go armed with some information. Alan

Hi Alan, Do you take folic acid a few days after the methotrexate? some people find they get less side effects if they take one each day but not on the day of the mtx. Hydroxychloroquine (plaquenil) is meant to be one of the safer drugs for RA and if it doesn't help or isn't enough on it's own then they may consider you for one of the biologic drugs, they are more expensive but if the other drugs don't agree with you or help then they may consider you for one of them. Good luck.

Thanks Lucy, That was really helpful. At the moment I only take 1 folic acid tablet a week 2 days after the mtx so that's useful to know. Thanks for the alternative drug information too. It gives me something to talk about when I see the doctor. Alan

I know some peoples liver results go back to normal when they increase the folic acid so it might be worth a try or give the rheumatologist nurse a call and ask what she thinks, they usually have a help line or someone that can give advice. Take care.

I was told they weren't worried about ALT until it gets over 100 and what usually happened was that I'd stop the MTX for a week or two until it had dropped down. Mtx didn't work for me though, so moved onto Hydroxy, then onto Cimzia. When I was on Mtx I took folic acid five days a week, not on the day or the day after.

I've been taking incapsulated a variety of 30 different fruits, vegetables and berries for the past 8 months and my arthritis is hardly an issue anymore. This is because of all the nutrients and berries reduce inflammation. Hope this helps everyone.

Why the sarcasm? some people would have liked to have known more about what Adam was recommending. We could them all have make up our own mind as to whether or not we thought it would have been helpful, so please don't always be so quick to jump in and think everyone is on selling something and ridiculing a person that may have been trying to genuinely help. It would have been better if he had made a new post regarding this and stopped the suspicion but I would rather have waited and been sure now perhaps we will never know.

If he was genuine Mandy , I doubt he would have hijacked every recent post. I find it an insult to my intelligence when sales people come on these forums trying to promote stuff. Why didn't he write his own post and title it with the subject matter. There are some people that come here that are desperately ill, or maybe newly diagnosed. To prey on these people is disgraceful. Alan , who started this thread was enquiring about his medication, he wasn't asking about fruit supplements. Now the subject he was concerned about, has been side tracked because of Adams sales pitch. If Adam is a genuine arthritis sufferer , he should respect that not everyone is into alternative therapies and should have written his claims on a new thread. I doubt Eves hilarious comment would have frightened him away, and if it did , then yes we may never know what his fruit capsules were , which I suspect wont deny anyone from discovering a miraculous treatment for arthritis.

It is spamming when you post the same thing on every thread and, on any other forum, it would be removed. He HAS started his own thread, I see, and it is interesting to note that all those who are interested in alternative remedies have yet to comment. Mandy, I'm sure you'll find it if you scroll down a few threads and you, and anyone else, can ask him directly about his supplements. This is Alan's thread.
