Subject: osteoarthritis in knee - questions

Hi, I wonder if I can get some info and opinions please. I'll say first off I haven't been officially diagnosed with osteoarthritis by my go (appointment Tuesday) but a physiotherapist has said all my symptoms would suggest that is what I have. The problem is in my right knee only. I do a lot of exercise and the problem started four months ago when I fell downstairs. since then my knee is becoming increasingly less mobile. I can't lunge in any direction or kneel on my right knee at all. It swells after exercising, aches 90% of the time and the pain is like a small firework behind the kneecap shooting outwards and up and over the knee cap. does this sound familiar to anyone else? any suggestions on treatment of it? Do any of you use knee supports? Thank you all in advance :)

Hi Lisa, Have you had you knee x-rayed or scanned? If not I would think you should. It may be that you have fluid in the knee and if that is the case then removing the fluid and injecting a steroid into it may bring a lot of benefit, if it was alright before the fall then I would be thinking it's the injury that's caused it.

Thanks Lucy. I was going to ask for an xray on Tuesday. It was ok before the fall...it only hurt if i did a lot of exercise but I've not been able to do a lunge movement properly without a twinge for about 18 months. After the fall the physio told me I have quite a bad external tibial torsion..I was born with it but it was never picked up on so it's worsened as I've got older. because my knee doesn't bend in the correct manor it's caused excessive wear on the joint :/ can you tell me.. does osteoarthritis ever cause a crackling noise??

Hi Lisa,

I sometimes get the same stabbing in my knees - if you have osteoarthritis and are still fairly young then exercise and a good diet can help to rebuild the bone density. But only if the right minerals are getting through to the blood stream.

I find that a knee support helps me - and that ensuring that the quad muscles are also strengthened - do light leg raises in the gym.

I also found this - which confirms my thoughts on this -

Lastly - I have been often taking Manganese supplements for 20 years and my knees are more likely to 'go' when I stop them. A lot of people take Glucosamine and Chrodroitin - but randomised medical trials have been much more successful when Manganese is also used.

This study about was discussed in Runners World magazine -

Hope you find something that works for you!

Bone density hasn't got anything to do with osteoarthritis, though you are right about impact exercise being good for the former, Sean. Low bone density causes osteoporosis. With OA, you have to make sure you are doing the right sort of exercise.

Of thanks for all the help. I dont know what fairly young is... i feel fairly young lol (45) Ive bought some glucosamine and chondroitin on the advise of a friend so ill look at adding manganese too. As I said I exercise daily but have suddenly developed these limitations to my movements. I work with weights and do lots of quad strengthening work and I've also bought some flexiseq to try as well as ordering a knee support.. Thanks loads for all the links and information, greathelp :)

Hi Lisa I use an inexpensive Solgar brand Manganese - as some had corn and wheat fillers in that I avoid. One expensive one even had wheat germ.

This is interesting too - and links to research -

http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic/minerals/manganese

High levels of manganese in supplements marketed for bone/joint health

Two studies have found that supplements containing a combination of glucosamine hydrochloride, chondroitin sulfate, and manganese ascorbate are beneficial in relieving pain due to mild or moderate osteoarthritis of the knee when compared to a placebo (54, 55). The dose of elemental manganese supplied by the supplements was 30 mg/day for eight weeks in one study (55) and 40 mg/day for six months in the other (54). No adverse effects were reported during either study, and blood manganese levels were not measured. Neither study compared the treatment containing manganese ascorbate to a treatment containing glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulfate without manganese ascorbate, so it is impossible to determine whether the supplement would have resulted in the same benefit without high doses of manganese.
