Subject: Burning rib pain

Has anyone suffered from this and what do you do to help?
I started what I thought was a flare up of my RA last Fri. Went to gp because of new symptom, who said costochondritis and need to see rheumy. Rheumy wasn't helpful at all and said could be a virus, so wait for results of blood test that I'm having tomorrow, because doesn't want to give me steroids incase virus. But I feel like a fire has been lit in my ribs, I'm in so much pain and can't take another sleepless night.

Nicola, I might be way out on this, but a friend of mine recently developed quite severe pain/ discomfort in her lower ribs, finally ended up in hospital, they tested her for goodness knows what, she had considerable increase in heart rate, followed finally by diarrhoea . She'd contracted the campylobacter virus( food poisoning), a problem in the shops right now, I believe, with chicken, not sure about fish/shell fish etc.., it is contagious. I am vague on this, certainly don't want to cause paranoia, if this is in that area maybe better to give a stool sample, hope I am way out, but can be treated by antibiotics if correctly diagnosed, best of luck, barry

Thank you both for replying. Although burning pain was felt high up in my ribs it was infact a reaction to a nsaid I'd had for other pain which had affected my stomach. Burning now better! Thank you :-))

Hi Nicola

This is relevant - and why we get additional reactions to NSAID.

INTESTINAL PERMEABILITY AND INFLAMMATION FOR PATIENTS USING NSAID

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1727292/

Conclusions "Intestinal permeability test dose composition is an important factor when assessing the effects of NSAIDs on intestinal integrity. All the conventional NSAIDs studied were equally associated with small intestinal inflammation apart from aspirin and nabumetone which seem to spare the small bowel. "
