Subject: Methtrexate

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. Im 36 and have been on methotrexate injection 25 mg for 12 months now and I have completely lost my sex drive. I only realised this today after googling as I was starting to wonder what was wrong with me. It's starting to get an issue now as my husband feels like I don't want him. It says that mtx can make you lose your libido and I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Hi Nichola

Do you take folic acid - I know that it necessary for methrotrexate - but I have just ready that too much folic acid screws up vitamin B12.

Here is a thread with others discussing the issue -

Hi Sean, yes I take a folic acid every weds, thanks for that I'll have a look. Spoke to my rhummy nurse and she suggested goin to the doctors to check my hormone levels and if they are ok it ll be the mtx. I'll just have to live with it as I certainly won't be coming off the mtx.

hi nichola

I would take the advice from your doctors , been on mtx 25mg along time , one thing is that with most long term ilnesses we suffer some kind of depresion , mildish with RA but its there & would talk to your gp for advice , dont know if that has anything to do with it or you have a lot of stress on at moment

Hi Colin thanks for replying. I'll see what the doctor suggests on Friday. I'm a really happy upbeat person, even since all this started 16 month ago I've never got down, even when I was at my worst and my crp was 73, I'm a busy mam of 2 and work 25 hours a week as a dental nurse so sometimes get a bit stressed, I have a very understanding husband which is good. Hopefully the doctor will suggest something.

Hi Nichola, I am on Mtx been on it now for couple of years, used to inject but didnt like doing it so went back onto tablets.

You say you have your folic acid on a Wednesday, I was always told that folic acid should be taken every day except the day of you methotrexate, maybe your not getting enough (excuse the pun it wasnt meant to offend) I would check it out with your rheumy nurse it might help. Good Luck, your too young to have these problems, but illness doesnt choose by age does it. I wouldnt like to still have my kids young with the way I sometimes feel. Understanding husbands (or wives) are worth their weight in gold. xx

Hiya Julie, thanks for reply. The consultant said take a folic acid a couple of days after your mtx so that's what I've always done, I will check that though. I've been feeling very tired this week, very achy and a little bit low which I never am. Has anyone got adrenal insufficiency as I'm relating to a lot of the symptoms x
