Subject: working and arthritis
Hi, I'm wandering if anyone can help and has maybe been in a similar situation. I've started a new job and have been there about a year. I've had 4 absences (less than 2 weeks in total) due to my arthritis and they are now threatening me with disciplinary action. Can they do that? They new about my arthritis as I told them in interview.

I am not sure of the law but think you are protected by what used to be the Disability Discrimination Act. I think they have to make reasonable adjustments. However, this is not my field and doesn't affect me so I don't know that much about it. Hopefully someone else here might be able to help or you could go to your union or an advice agency. I've linked to the government website below but it is a little thin on how things can be interpreted. https://www.gov.uk/rights-disabled-person/employment

hi laura , I would speak to CAB or someone like that , it depends on the size of the company & how many employees they have & you said you been there about a year , dont know if you have a union to help used to be a union rep for few years & then managed a Foundry with about 50 in it , but was part of a large engineering site but was along time ago so dont know the employment laws at the moment

I'm not with the union at the mo but I'm going to join now, only problem is they cant help with an already open case but they can help with future ones(which I'm bound to have.)its a large company with about 200 employees. I felt sure I was covered under disability discrimination but I don't really know how to go about anything from here! I wandered about writing a statement with how I feel, reasonable adjustments on their part and maybe something from my specialist?
