Subject: Psoractic Arthritis

Hello My name is Stacy and my daughter was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis in April 2014. She will be 10 on Oct 21st. I'm wondering if anyone can help me understand what she might be feeling. Her symptoms last year started with swelling in her fingers and toes. She was put on Sulidac and swelling went away. She has been off meds now since June and seems to be doing great. When swelling in fingers and toes started she really didn't complain all that much and her mobility was great. She has a very high pain tolerance. I just worry that she won't express when she has symptoms. She also has hypothyroidism dx last Nov 2014 and that is regulated with daily meds. Looking for help to understand what she might be feeling and to hopefully understand if she is just being a normally whiny kid or if she really has symptoms. Her biggest complaints are headache and tummy ached. Thanks in advance.

Hi Stacy

I have a form of arthritis called AS. It is very closely related to Psoriatic Arthritis - I also sometimes get skin problems.

My symptoms started when I was young probably pre-16 - but went to docs at about 19. I am now 49.

Just wondered if the doctors did any other tests such as ANTI-TTG - or ANTI-Gliadin Antibodies tests?

My daughter is 13 and just had the TTG test done - they didn't do anti-gliadin - she gets back pain and has a bad tummy too. We are trying out a gluten free diet but it is almost impossible because she is a super baker! She is seeing a pediatrician again tomorrow for further tests.

I've read a lot and researchers know for sure that arthritis and hypothyroidism have huge links (2.5 to 5 times more likely) to Celiac disease and may have a link to the tummy aches and gut issues your daughter is experiencing. I also know from my own experience that gluten proteins can exacerbate the immune system in arthritis.

A friend of mine with Psioratic Arthritis is reducing his flares by following gluten free also, he still takes methotrexate also though.

I also had serious headaches / migraines in my earlier life that I now have overcome by removing and managing food sensitivities. BTW - I have linked about 75% of my eczema / rashes / dry skin to another food sensitivity - Cows milk!

Its like clock work - have too much cream or milk and my elbow pits, knee pits and shins itch with a few hours then dry out and go sore next day - then if I don't stop for a few week it get my eyes too. I seem OK with butter and goats and sheeps milk.
