Subject: worst flare up.. will they all be like this
Hi all...my last two flare ups have been significantly worse than previous ones... trying to walk from my car to work this morning (a 7 minute walk usually) was simply impossible, the pain in my hip and radiating down my left thigh was unbearable, I had to call my boss to pick me up. I can normally grit my teeth and get through it but this was pain on a whole new level... are all flare ups going to be to this level now? I've got so many areas of pain, I'm really struggling to deal with this :(

Hi Duncan. What medication do you take for your RA? I think you should get in touch with your rheumatology department and tell them how you are suffering. It may be time to add another drug to what you're already on or get onto one of the biologic drugs. For something to help immediately you probably could do with a steroid injection and that should bring some relief. Since I started on rituximab I haven't suffered the same severe flares.

Hi Lucy. Sulfasalazine. It seems to work really well but when i do get flare ups now they're really bad... My hip feels raw and walking is very painful, my hands are terribly blotchy and sore today too...:( Nothing seems to help

Hi Duncan, You could call your specialist nurse or consultant and see if they will help you as a matter of urgency. As Lucy says, a steroid injection should help. I have them frequently and couldn't manage without them.

Thank you Sleek Fox. My shoulder has started now too... I had a steroid jab in my wrist a few months back and it worked wonders. Silly question time though, would one steroid jab help all the areas of pain or does the jab only work on a small area?

They can give you a systemic one into your arse, Duncan. It's called Depo Medrone and it will help all your joints. Please do ring your hospital. You really shouldn't have to suffer like this.

hi Duncan , few things , I would ask to have your drugs looked at, Sulfasalazine is ok & been on it for 19 years but they tend to give it with other drugs like methotrexate which is alot more effective would also ask for a steriod injection as mention earlier , your GP can arrange this & also as for your hip , mostly with RA you get bursitis in hip & pretty rare for RA to get in your hip & if it did I expect you would end up in hospital , things that help bursitis is heat (heat pad or hot water bottle) & anti-inflammatory gel like difflam

Hi Duncan, I had antibiotics and steroids when I had a bursitis. I did heal very well.
You need to be checked just in case it is any thing else. Hope you get it sorted soon. Take care and let us know how you are.

Hi Colin. Thanks for taking time to comment.. It could be bursitis as I have it on my elbow...I've heard so many horror stories about methotrexalate I'm really quite scared about ever having to take it .. would bursitis in the hip be very painful, i couldn't put any weight on my leg as it was so painful

Hi Lois. Thankyou for taking time to comment :) I feel so much better today that horrible fogginess that is pain has gone..They want to see me next Week. It's not easy as I live ion Spain and my Spanish is not that great!!!

Duncan , bursitis in the hip is nothing like having it in your elbow , got it in my left elbow & pretty much pain free , hips are something else , try some heat on it or see a doctor , as for methotrexate I been on it since 1998 along with sulpha & now a biologic drug

Oh that's a long way from us, probably a good 6 hours..We live inbetween Valencia and Alicante but slightly inland in a pretty village called Benidoleig :)
