Subject: Practical help in the workplace
Hi all. I'm a newbie on here. I have RA. I am currently suffering with a flare up but I'm still coming to work. Each keystroke is painful. Sitting is very uncomfortable. Has anyone got any tips/products that help sufferers in an office environment during an attack? Thanks :)

Have you got occupational health at work, Duncan? They can help advise you on all that stuff. I don't work in an office so can't help.

NRAS do a booklet on RA at work. Also I had advice from a physio ( print out) which I was referred to before Diagnosis of RA showing the right height of chair to table/ keyboard etc and best type of mouse to use .I think you might find that if you search on a physio site' . Sorry- I don't still have that specific info but hope that gives you a few leads to try. Even lifting a phone to the ear for too long can make shoulders ache. My job wasn't t all the time at a desk so I was able to take breaks to do other stuff. Hope you can find some helpful tips.

Hi Duncan, Do you use splints on your wrist when using the keyboard, they might give them a bit support when you are having a flare. I also got some pens on ebay a while ago and they were easier to use, they were much thicker and easier to grip. If you can get up and move around a bit as sitting too long makes the stiffness worse. Hope the flare passes soon.

Hi Lucy. I'm think about bandaging my right wrist. Those pens sound great will have to find some. Today is not good :( lots of pain and I daren't take pain killers as I then can't do my job. Thank you for the well wishes :)

Sorry to hear that, Duncan. Sometimes a couple of paracetamols can take the edge of it without affecting the work. I got my splints from the physio, dept. at the hospital. I saw some of those elastic wrap around the wrist supports in the pound shop, better than nothing, they also sell them in some of the sports shops and of course, ebay. You are doing well managing to work through it. Take care x
