Subject: Sinus infection

This has been plaguing me for nearly six months now, taken 2 months supply of antibiotics, due to have my sinuses drained, but when, heaven knows, all day, every day, and night, this infection is running down into my stomache, already have arthritic problems most joints, really concerned my who system is being poisoned, eat sauerkraut, take acidophilus tablets daily, just feel permanent nausea, going to try colloidal silver., but really just firing shots in the dark, frequently nasal douche, inhale , (not much left of nose), believe so much of my arthritic issues are immune probs, now this, any one any ideas how to rid this infection from my system ( shooting myself already considered), feel my health ebbing away, almost sure this infection is amplifying joint pain, barry

Barry I used to suffer a lot with my sinus. I had tried every single nasal spray, all the tablets, and endless health products.

The one thing that took mine away was making my own salt water mixture, I made up 1 pint warm water with 2 teaspoons of salt. I used an old nasal spray bottle (Actifed one) with the long spray part, I filled the bottle with my own mixture and after couple of days I was great. Even my son who now swears by it couldn't believe how it helped his hayfever. Give it a try, just two sprays each nostril and with it being saline solution it doesn't sting.

I am still clear today and don't suffer hayfever any more either which is added bonus.

Hope you get some relief.

Many years ago my my father was in the Navy and one of the sailors was having terrible trouble with sinus and catarrh, my father told him to put a bucket over the side and fill it with salt water and stick his head in it, he said he told him that because he was fed up listening to him moaning about it and a while later the man came up to him and thanked him, said it was the best cure ever.

I used to use drops that were prescribed and they make it worse so what Julie has suggested is certainly worth a try, Barry. I know it is a horrible thing and can cause terrible facial pain, someone else told me they held small heated bean bags against there face and it helped with the pain. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi, I have the same problem as does a friend with RA. Same as you, tried everything under the sun.
I think its caused by the arthritic drugs as they lower our immune system even more.
Good luck with it, it is very annoying, adding to all the other problems we have already got.
I tried salt water too but it had no lasting effect.

Thanks everybody, I do ' netti pot' my sinuses with fine sea salt and bicarbonate, but it gets nowhere near this infection, even hurts a times when I blink, the amount of stuff that runs down the back of my throat to my stomache is alarming, and now it's pollen time,,I'm just so blocked, cutting out gluten and dairy trying to ease the blockage, it also causes nausea, had my top teeth out one side to ease it, just feel this poison goes systemic, just hurt everywhere, like really bad flu, but not flu, really want to detox, cleanse my body, but to shift this first, at an all time low, light sensitivity, head pain, 6 months of it with very loud tinnitus, there has to be a central cause, maybe allergy sensitivity with something, trouble is, too tired to fight back right now, sorry to moan, thanks again

Don't aplogise Barry, that's what this site is for. I think you have said before that you have been to an ENT specialist, but perhaps it's time to see someone else about the it. Have you had your sinuses cleaned out? I had a polyp in my nose many years ago and they cleaned mine out and I've not been bothered with it since.

You really need to see someone and insist that you get some help.

Take care.

Don't stop trying Barry, something will work. Like Lucy said when polyps are removed it clears things up, maybe you have a polyp deeper down. Actually I did have polyps few years ago and sounds horrible but you could see the horrible gunky stuff going down my throat, it was awful.

I paid private to have operation, I was terrified of NHS doing it (Im not well off just was scared) terrified of having it done and had been putting if off for years, but it was okay having it done. First thing I remember when having bandages removed was the smell of bacon and toast and for first time in years I could taste food. So maybe you have them too.

If you have been to dentist lately and had xray, they can usually see from xray if you have any inflammation in your sinus area, worth asking.

Maybe the salt saline wasn't clearing my sinus after all, maybe I was just being bunged up with hayfever. Whatever happened I don't have any problems now.

I know you are tired of it all and I understand how you feel, but you must keep trying and I am sure that you will get it sorted, those who shout loudest get listened to so don't let doctors fob you off with tablets get an xray done.

Sorry that sounded a bit bossy but it wasn't meant to be.

You're right on Julie, I have had a scan done, I'm totally blocked up, horrified having this done, the sinuses drained etc.., I honestly can't remember the last time I truly tasted or smelt anything, unless it's really pungent, want this muck out of my system, body, will give the salt water nasal spray a go, but have to be careful, never use tap water, always boil it first, there is a risk of meningitis , should use kosher salt, de ionised water, I believe boots do a saline spray, this infection has been really active for 6 months, but I believe it may have been in my sinuses for years previous to that, I have had MRSA. Colonised in my nasal passageways befor this, maybe now, broke my nose years ago, bone spurs in my septum, just feel my whole system is contaminated by this muck, arthritis so aggressive last few months, too coincidental to ignore, barry

Hi Barry, You need to push for the procedure no matter how off putting it may sound. It is time you had treatment and was given a break. The constant pain of Arthritis is bad enough without all the side issues that go with it.
Julie is right I have just found out the louder you shout the more likely they will listen. Not literally shouting but keep ringing to ask have I got an appointment yet to have my sinus's cleared. Ring every day if you have to.
Once you get the procedure done you can start getting all the other niggling things sorted and you will be a different person.

Good luck with it all keep your chin up and take care.

Thanks Lois, you're both right, too many let downs in the past, plenty of incompetence, tired of an ailing system that threatens even more infections if they don't get it right, the problem really concerns me, the supposed cure does too, knowing which way to turn, who to trust, I mean before I have this operation I want to meet the people doing it, get the measure of them, just familiarity, it's all so removed now, I'm sure I can help this arthritis problem if I clear my body of infection, and any allergy sensitivity, then maybe I can move away from the NHS, manage myself, deal with this screaming loud tinnitus, it's not stress related that I know of, I accepted the doom and gloom of my situation a long time ago, I have to help myself, right now though I'm up against a brick wall, can't shift this sinus issue, need to, then move on, lovely to here from you, all of you, barry

Hi Barry, well you sound very positive. You are entitled to name any Hospital you want to attend. I moved a distance from my old Hospital but still return there for my Pacemaker checks. Not sure I trust my local hospital it doesn't seem to have a brilliant review from the Locals.
Have you got an appointment for your operation yet? If you haven't make a point of telling your GP it's taking too long and you need seeing now.
I am sure like you once this is sorted you will be able to manage yourself.
I bet you when you are sorted a bit your situation will not seem so bad. When we have to much to cope with life seems a little dark. Believe me when you come through all this you will be one tough guy.
Take care

Just thought Barry don't let them say to you its due to hayfever etc., they will because its summer, you know its not.

After all I have said about being okay with mine I am actually bunged up so much at minute, been okay for couple of years but I have just realised what has caused the change:-

We have only just recently moved into our bungalow, we don't have a greenhouse anymore so my clever husband decided to put his tomato plants in the utility room - WRONG MOVE - every day I am itching on the roof of my mouth and eyes itching all day. Its the bloody tomato plants, guess where they are going!! Used to affect me if I went into greenhouse in old house so kept away from the plants.

Hopefully my symptoms will go away again once plants are out of house. Men and their ideas:)

Good luck Barry and get your appointment made soon.

Thanks Julie, no this is a lot worse than hay fever had it some 6 months now, constant pain around left eye, what does concern, similar to yourself, pollen count, sinus already blocked, this just adds to it, it's the amount of, well basically infected muck that's running down into my stomache, they've told me to stay off dairy products etc..if I had the sinus drained now I also have extra blockage with this tree pollen I believe it is, that presumably follows on from all this rape seed growing everywhere, stomache hurts, feel nausea a lot,, lousy bug infested winter, now this. I lived in Australia, you know I never had any of this, plus the pollution from traffic locally, I really want to get out of this country, eat healthily, just get out, thanks barry

Have you tried to get the appointment yet. They really have to sort you problems for you soon.
I am sure your whole outlook would be so different.
I have been taking Benydril for the pollen the first time ever. The pollen is bad this year so I have been told. Itchy eyes streaming nose just to add a bit more to the mix. Oh well that's life.

Take care let me know when that appointment comes through.

Lois, I contacted them, they'd get back to me a sap, never happened, have a nephew in Oz, he came here for about 3 years, awful problems with hay fever, went back, never had another issue, the dry air out there would at least dry out this infection, help me warm my joints, I eat loads more fruit out there, so quenching, you can't touch this country for its history, landscapes etc, but climate, I'm fed up being banged up, having to care for my 99 year old mother is really bad for me now, apart from her I've no commitment here, no other obligation, but maybe in another 2 years I'll be too ill to leave here, then I'll be damned, worked all my life, saved, watching it all wasting away now, really screws me up, I could adopt any diet, live really healthy lifestyles, in some other place, a warm, friendly place, not here I'm afraid.

Lois, Australia is a long way away, it doesn't matter, I'm committed to caring for my mother, it's all to late in the day, my luck ran out some time back, tinnitus is severe with me, it's not related to this sinus infection, but I believe the arthritis is, and with it the right diet. The sinus op will come, my mothers just tested positive for benign skin cancer, got her back in hospital next week, I laugh at it all some times, I'm in no great pain, I just hurt nearly everywhere, so many people out there in so much pain, my problems are little in comparison, it's getting it right in the first place, the bonding and strength of a one to one relationship, family and friends to be loved, the right employment, the right place to live, a love of life, I really have none of these, forget the fatigue, the self pity, depression, whatever, it's just the luck of the draw, I really believe I've had a good run, it's still a good life, take what's left of it, make the best that you can of it, and too hell with the ailments, they'll have their day, but not yet, take care, barry

Hi Barry I hope that if I am in need my son will look after me the way you have looked after your mum, I cant see it myself I don't get a birthday or mothers day card from him, still love him and know he loves me but don't think he could do what you are doing. You must love your mum lots to still be there.

It is hard to care for parents, I used to look after my mum for many years after my dad died, did most for her but my brothers and sister got all the praise, sad really but that was her. She did thank me for looking after her about a week before she died which was nice to know she did appreciate me.

You say you have tinnitus, I do aswell really bad at minute. Have you ever been told that anything can be done. My g.p. doesn't know I have it, just never told him although I have had it for years. Bit scared of people poking into my ears maybe that's why never said. Felt same about my nose but glad I got sinus's sorted, took me couple of years to pluck up courage for that one. Just a big baby me when it comes to people poking around.
Take care Barry

Hi Julie, looking after elderly parents when I feel elderly myself is a little hard going, bit like bringing up a young family in your 60's, tinnitus is a real curse, it's so loud 24/7, any time I'm awake. Doctors are useless, audiologist have been very kind/helpful, ENT absolutely no help whatsoever, just grin and bare it, their attitude, they should get it, do feel for you, I've had it 8 years, feel sometimes like my head is vibrating with it, so many medications it flares up with, especially all NSAIDS, and foods too, refined sugar, chocolate, caffeine, makes dealing with arthritis all the more difficult, hence I just give up, well, rest till I get my strength back, tired now, wake into a new day, going nowhere, doing nothing, there were things to do, but it just involved pain so I backed off more and more, each day just passes me by now, would like to go to a meeting places, there just aren't any, trying to get into voluntary work, but what, I'm not sure, all I know for tinnitus is white noise generators and prayer, life's a bitch at times, barry

Hi Barry, I agree it is hard when doctors don't seem to understand how bad things can be. At the moment I can hear my own heartbeat so loud its annoying, but then again if that noise stops I will be in trouble wont I.

It wondered if you like playing computer games or xbox games, they are a great way to lose yourself for a couple of hours or longer in my case!! At the moment I do jigsaws on laptop and when I do these things I forget about everything else.

Hobbies, do you have any hobbies, again you could look online for ideas. Making miniatures is another hobby which is great to do because it doesn't take up room and you can do a lot while you watch t.v. Mind you its not good if hands are hurting.

Keep looking into doing voluntary work, maybe your local church runs some kind of club where you could maybe help.

Sounds like you have pulsatile tinnitus Julie, mine is a very loud hissing, so loud I fact that it's constant sound distorts,I don't play computer games, used to play card games, but addiction is the problem there, plus I upset neck arthritis too long on computers, this contraption is good, but it's also good to get away from. I have no indoor hobbies, used to be a walker, but not now, I struggle with this life. What I really miss is the relationship, doing things together, being there for each other, soul less now, not pining, just realistic, at63 like this, no good, right foot difficult to walk on right now, left knee now giving out, body past sell by date, such is life Julie

Your right about sounds being distorted, I do have the hissing as well as the pulsatile which is so annoying its so loud, if I press my jugular vein it stops but I go red in the face!!! So that's not a good thing to do, I just put up with it.

You keep looking for something to occupy your mind Barry and things will get better. You need to make sure your screen height is so that your nose should be in centre of the screen, about arms length away this stops neck pain. Should know I sat in front of one 8 hours a day.

I'd dread an office job, anything indoors really, let alone on a computer, driving trucks got me out and about and all over the place, but stress, bad posture, very long hours, damaged my neck and back, at one point my back was as stiff as a buckboard, plus my diet suffered, it's all in the past now, but patching up the remnants isn't easy. Thanks for the hug Julie, a real life cuddle, a good group of friends, someone special, long sunny days, a beautiful view, these things push tinnitus and arthritis right out of the way, we can live in that moment, even for just a short period, so special, really something, give you a hug back too, hope hubby don't get grumpy, barry

That's what I find so difficult now, banged up with my mother 24/7, suffocating, today the blind club, then the hospital, at least we got out, we've had our longest day, now it fades, I almost count the hours, worlds too small, the older I get, the more I feel compressed for time, it's bedlam out there, so many people with so many problems, im just one, the loneliness of it all, I never ever used to feel not so much lonely, but more alone, must get out there doing volunteering work, take loads of painkillers, ill health is like dragging a ball and chain around with you.Used to walk the dog, maybe 70 or 80 miles a week, sometimes 25 miles in a day, up and down every hill, used to joke that I'd walk and walk till I could walk no more, then I just turned round and walked back, the original Forest Gump, and that was with working, I loved every moment! And so did the dog. I was always work orientated, walking was the only way I could express relaxation, barmy thinking about it now, plain barmy, barry
