Subject: Negative arthritis?

I have been suffering with pains in my fingers on my right hand. The index and middle fingers are swollen and the index finger has lumps on it, GP sent me for an xray and blood tests. Apparently there was nothing on the xray ad the blood tests came back saying I did not have rheumatoid arthiritis. However, GP has referred me to a rheumatologist as he is unsure but I have heard that you can get negative arthritis. I also have lumps - bunions ? which are a form of arthritis on both feet and my feet are quite painful as well. Can anyone give me some advice regarding the pain and what I can expect from the consultant

Hi Jacqui, sorry your post has been overlooked. There are CT MRI scans which are better than a normal x-ray. Yes you can get sero-negative RA(I think) This is not my forte but I am sure someone will come through for you.
The Consultant will give you more tests then make his/her decision.
OA is a very painful condition also. So maybe this is what your GP thinks it may be. Your Gp is doing everything he/she should be doing.

Good luck for the Consultation. Take Care.

Hello

Hope this might help.

Saw it the other day and put it in my favourities incase any questions popped up about it. You are lucky in some respects because I've read on numerous occasions that GP don't refer people to consultants if test come back negative for RA.

Hi Jacqui, Ive just seen this. not been on for a while. 2yrs ago I went to the Dr with same symptoms. Had x rays, nothing really showed up. however my bloods(esr) were high. To cut a long story short. they told me I had sero negative inflammatory arthritis. I did not have the rhuematoid marker. But it could develope. Have you seen the consultant? If you want to ask me anything, please dont hesitate to ask. This forum has helped me loads.

Thank you so much for your help, thought I was going mad! The appointment I have with the Rheumatologist is for 5th August. I have been taking codeine for the pain but it doesn't really help much when it is bad. fingers crossed (no pun intended) that I can get some help.

No problem, you could also try some glucosamine gel to rub on your joints. Or some anti inflammatory pills.

Hi, I had to go to the gp the other day for something else and he mentioned the seronegative arthritis and he thought that is what I have. My hands and feet have been quite painful and I have been taking codeine an naproxen which doesn't really help. Any suggestions?

There's not a lot you can do until you see the Rheumy team, I'm afraid. However, you can try using heat or cold on your joints if they are swollen and not using them too much i.e. walking. Go and check out Arthritis Research, they have some tips on there.
