Subject: Humira

In the past Ive been prescribed Methotrexate, Embrel and Golimumab etc etc. I have been on prednisolone for past 4 year. Ive got cataracts from the pred, my bones are thinning and my face is the shape of a giant smartie !!
Rheumatologist now want me to have Humira - I have heard of it but I think of it as being just like the others - these made my hair fall out in clumps and I had weeping sores from the waist down. I have a feeling it is me that reacts to everything badly - I even react badly to iron supplements and paracetamol if they are in a plastic capsule.
Is anyone taking Humira and are there any side effects ? I am thinking of saying no and staying on the pred even with the side effects.

Hi Sammy, I've had similar problems to you, including the cataracts. I also have the same reservations about starting new drugs as, as my nurse put it, 'they are all immunosuppressants and the side effects are similar.' I suppose you can hope that Humira doesn't affect you so badly and it's would say it's worth a try, should you decide to take it. I'm very ambivalent myself but will give anything a go, up to a point. I haven't actually had Humira but have tried Cimzia, Enbrel, Mtx, Leflunomide and Sulphasalazine. Oh, and Hydroxy. I'm currently just on pred, with all it's side effects. I'm getting more and more towards trying alternative stuff, though I don't hold out any great hope for that either. Maybe I'm just a bit jaded.

Hi Sammy, I'm on humira, two years now. Helped me a lot if anything my hair has got thicker! I sometimes have hay fever type symptoms when I take it but just use antihistamines.
I'm on methotrexate and hydroxy as well but definitely have a different life using the humra I feel almost human again. I hope if you do try it that it works x

Thanks Sleek Fox, I dread starting these new drugs. I just know its something to do with me that I react so badly to everything and I think the chance of finding something that doesnt have these side effects is pretty slim. The pred keeps me walking and working though and Im grateful for that. Hope you are keeping well !

I'm exactly the same, Sammy. It's not easy making a decision but I do try things, knowing they will cause problems. I don't get too disappointed as I expect it. I've got a very bad shoulder at the moment which a steroid injection two weeks ago hasn't helped. Bah.

Hello Lara and thanks for your message. This time last year I lost at least 80% of my hair and it has only just started growing back so your experience is really encouraging. Do you inject Humira ? The golimumab was painless but the Enbrel wasnt too pleasant. I think I have to give it a try, but I am really frightened about what is going to happen. So far I have lost about 3 week of work in 3 year and all of this has been down to side effect of medication and not the arthritis itself. Thanks again for replying x
