Subject: Hip replacements and longevity

Hi

I have R.A and had THR 3 yrs ago and for some time now I been getting some aches on the area of my implant, has anyone experienced this or is it the R.A affecting my joint. Also does anyone have any ideas how to keep the hip implant lasting longer.

Thanks for any replies

Hi Suz, Do you still attend the orthopaedic consultant that did the operation? If you are not due to see them it might be an idea to phone and ask for advice. I had a half hip replacement in February and I still get pain around the wound and numbness in my leg but my main concern is the difference in leg length. I have an insole but still feel I rock to the one side.

I'm not sure how to make it last longer though, I think a lot of it might be luck, but perhaps avoiding things like badminton or anything that makes abnormal movements to the hip.

I think you should get it checked out though, or even see a physio. xx

Oh thank you Lucy for your advice, I should get in touch with the orthopaedic dept. I haven't had apt from them. I do limp sometimes on my operated leg due to pain in the muscles or I don't know if its the bone area maybe physio would help as didn't keep at it much.

Your wound pain should slowly subside Lucy as muscles take upto six months to fully heal.

Thank you again for your advice I didn't think about contacting the orthopaedic dept.

Take care xx

I am due back to see the consultant in September, Suz, but they said if I had any problems to contact them sooner, so I think you should contact them and ask for an appointment and they could x-ray your hip just to see all is ok with it. It's always best to get anything checked out that we are concerned about.
Take care and thank you for your reply too. xx
