Subject: Travel & syringes

Hi, I'm due to start my 2nd biologic today which will be via injection. I'm going on holiday soon and wondered how people manage with taking syringes/keeping them cool etc. easy jet policy is not to store meds in their fridges and I estimate travel time/transfers/waiting around is going to be approx 8 hrs. Has anyone any tips? Thanks x

It might be an idea to buy a small cool bag. Hope this helps. Have a lovely holiday.

Hi Rachel, make sure the injections are in suitcase and you have a letter from your rheumy nurse stating what you need to take injections for, or the may take them off you. have a lovely holiday.x

Hi Rachel, The hospital or makers will be able to advise on what to do when travelling. I would keep in with me on the aircraft though and in a cool bag.

Thanks everyone. Bupa who distribute in my area will do the letter for me (my GP charges) and small cool bags can be found on line. I also stumbled across something else, chronic anaemia is listed as a condition where you should not fly. As this goes hand in hand with a lot of long term health conditions I was not aware. I flew last year and was fine but I don't think I will try long haul. It's to do with oxygen levels in the cabin. X

I had an accident over in Dubai that meant I had to have a hip operation and it left me very low in iron and the insurance people insisted that I had to have a nurse fly back with me in case I needed oxygen, although it was just 8.3 at the time. I have always been quite low in iron but never thought that had to be declared. Enjoy your holiday. x

Is it possible to get your injection day around to the day you go so you can take it before you leave?
That's what I do (as normally only travel for a week), failing that I just miss it for 1 week if the days don't fall right. Not sure if this is what you are supposed to do but when I asked My Bupa nurse he didn't have a clue and gave me another number to phone who then told me to phone the airline and it all seemed too much hassle!
In my 20s I have enough trouble getting through security with my various tablets and joint replacements setting off the bleepers to carry injections too. 'But you don't look sick' and all that....
