Subject: sulfasalazine or methotexate

Subject: Re: Sulfasalazine OR Methotrexate?

I've just been diagnosed with RA (aged 72) and I've opted for sulfasalazine over methotrexate. I am currently on two tablets a day for a week and will increase the dose over three weeks till I'm on four a day. So far no side effects on my seventh day. When can I expect them, if I get them?

I'm not sure. I took it last year for a few weeks. I didn't have any side effects that I could feel but it affected my liver (a particular problem for me) so I had to come off it. I have another friend who was on it for several years with very few side effects. It sounds quite hopeful if you haven't had any yet.

Not everyone gets side effects, Alan. I'm sure there's a fair few on here who are on Sulfasalazine without problems.

Just a p.s., Alan. Have you had a look at Arthritis Research or NRAS website for further information on your treatment? There is a lot of info on there.

Many thanks sleek fox. I've found the NRAS website and guess I have a lot of reading to do. No doubt it's a case of time will tell but thanks a lot for your encouragement and advice. Alan

Thanks Colin. I've started checking sleek fox's suggested sources. At the moment I'm only on sulfasalazine. Hopefully it will work though it's good to know the combination can work. Alan
