Subject: RA in back

Hi.I have had RA for the last 4 years and old consultant said it didn't affect back but have suffered with back all that time now my doc thinks it is RA. Does anyone else have it in back and if so is there anything that helps stop the pain and squashing feeling

hi julie , you should asked to be refered to a consultant , your old consultant in correct , RA dont affect some joints , ie backs , hips are very rare & not with people starting out with RA

There are several blood test they can like check for Rheumatoid factor and anti-CCP antibodies , + ESR & CRP . & ask to be tested for a gene known as HLA-B27 , it goes with ankylosing spondylitis

julie so you are positive for Rheumatiod factor . this will help with getting some of the drugs ,

hip problems are normaly cause by lower back problems , you can get bursitis of the hips which can be painful

some UK charities have free help lines like Arthritis Care & National Rheumatiod Arthritis Society , you can find them in the link section above

I've had bursitis on one hip, very painful indeed and also caused by R, according to my consultant.

You should get them to send you for an MRI to check that nothing else is going on.
