Hi I am an oldie at 66. Although I struggled with arthritis at a very early age Drs just shrugged me off with a paracetamol. I was that bad that I could not straighten up one day at work. I had been having bad pains in the hands, feet, joints, and back also ribs etc.I saw my Dr who at the request of my employer sent me to see a specialist who was not a very nice person, right nasty saying I was not old enough to have it and he had a waiting room of elderly patients to see and I was wasting his time. He did diagnose osteoarthritis, and I finished work at 45. I had x-rays and blood tests which they gave a diagnosis of chronic osteoarthritis. I was on DLA and also got mobility and the lower rate of personal care as I have difficulty carrying anything and at times moving my fingers can be bad. Now I am on my pension but still receive mobility until Dec this year 015 when I will be re-assessed even though I was given mobility for life. I will probably lose it as I can walk 20 meters even though I have serious pain in my legs ,joints and feet and have to keep stopping. Losing my mobility benefit will make me almost house bound. I am now finding that I am in heavy pain continually and take 2 x 30 mls tablets of codeine phosphate four times a day. I am now in constant pain all over my body but soldier on as you have to. I will not give in to it intentionally. I asked the Dr for some stronger tablets and told there was none. I am unable to take muscle relaxants tablets as they give me stomach problems so I massage Movelat cream into my joints three times a day, if I don't do this it gets that my lower leg will not move then I cannot walk. I went back to see my Dr about the pain in my leg bones and his exact words were " What do you want me to do about it ". After being off work a while I was branded as lazy by my wife who constantly moans at me when I cannot do small jobs around the home. she informed that should I get cancer she will do nothing for me and does nothing much now and has withdrawn from doing any house work. I find daily life a struggle and as I cannot hold heavy pans, I tend to open a can of soup or beans and eat them cold. Thankfully I drive so I am able to get out for a hot meal when she does not cook. Life is a constant struggle yet I look so good. Thankfully I have two sons who do lifting for me. Ok rant over. Roll on the warmer weather, I am dreading my heating bills coming in as like all sufferers heat is needed..

You won't necessarily lose your mobility component as they ask if you can walk 20 metres without being in pain and having to stop. When you get reassessed, make sure you get someone from an advice agency to help you fill in the forms. It makes a huge difference, I'm told.

As for your doctor, if I were to get treatment like that, I would change doctors.

Hi There, I would definitely get a new Dr. There are many pain killers out there. Tramadol or Tramacet being two of them.
I hope you find some comfort in the fact that this forum is here to listen to each other and give support without being judged. Please keep in touch and rant when you like. Get that GP changed.
Take care and chin up.

Thank you sleekfox I did not realise that you were asked if you were in pain or needed to stop when walking 20 meters.

Thank you for the information on the tablets I am seeing a different Dr next week. Unfortunately at the surgery I visit you have to have the Dr that is available at that particular time. I will sort it as I can certainly dig my heals in if I need too

Hi Roly,
People who do not have arthritis or any form of it do not understand how hard it is to live with including doctor's etc.
So unfortunately we have to bang on at them to get what we need.

Also do not worry about your dla as anyone over 65 just has a form to fill in.

So don't stress as stress only makes arthritis worse.

As for your wife get her to help you more know men don't like to ask for help but please do.

Good luck with everything best regards Deborah x
