Subject: Steroids

Hello all, my question is, can GPs prescribe pred packs ( I think that is the correct name) or is it only rheumies ? I have RA but very mild and I want to travel in the summer. If I have a flare I want something for an emergency/back up. I don't have to see the hospital consultant until July so was hoping to get these from my regular GP.

They can prescribe pills but I don't know about injections. You need to talk to your rheumy to find out the correct dosage though.

The problem is a gp may not prescribe if your rheumy hasn't stated what you need. Steroids are a tricky thing to manage and even I have to talk to a rheumy before upping them and tailing them back down and I've been on them for years. Do be very careful. You might be better off having a steroid injection before you go. That's what I normally do.

Thanks SK, the problem (or not) is that I am not in any pain at present and am in clinical remission. I am fully aware that this may not last and I could flare up at any time. I will give hospital a ring then, and ask advice. Thanks again.

I can see your problem. Get them to give you a plan of what to take, for how long and how to tail down, if you have a flare. You can still call them from abroad, of course!
