Subject: Methotrexate help?!

Eventually got my diagnosis and got put on methotrexate, started out on 7.5mg for two weeks then today the dose got upped to 15mg, and it left me feeling awfully sick. Anything I can do to combat the sicky feelings? I took the tablets at 6am and still feeling queasy now :(

Hi Bekki, I took mine with food at night. You could also ask for an anti emetic to take with it.

Hi Bekki, I agree with bsk about taking them at night after food. I take mine after my dinner at night and best to drink a full glass of water with them. I think you would have been better starting them a bit slower, perhaps going up by 2.5mg each week as it is a big jump from 7.5 to 15mg.

hi Bekki , how much folic acid they given you , it varies from one 5mg tablet a week to six 5mg tablets a week

increasing from 7.5 to 15mg will cause problems & normaly they increase it 2.5 at a time , make sure you have regular blood test done atleast once a month & more when they are upping methotrexate

I've had no problems with MTX. I started on a low dose and then increased it by 2.5 mg every week, I do think that a jump from 7.5 to 15 in one go isn't right, but I am not medical trained, it's just my opinion.

I am 99% certain that you can split your dose during the day, take half in the morning and half at night, don't take my word for it ask your GP or specialist nurse if you want to try it.

I take 5mg of folic acid everyday, even MTX day (due to hair loss and not sickness). I did question my consultant about this because I'd read so many times on forums that others had been told not to take it on MTX day, but he told me that it doesn't make any difference.

Hope you are feeling better.

Take Care

Thank you all again for the helpful comments, I contacted the rhumatology dept and they said to go back to 7.5mg of mtx this week then up my dose one tablet per week like you all said. Then when I get back to 15mg to take half in the morning then half in the night, but if the nausea continues then they're gonna switch me onto something else.
Thank you all again, it's so helpful being able to speak to people that are in the same boat!

Thank you Lynn, I may have to ask for them. I know I'm in very early days of mtx yet but I'm seeing no difference only more and more pain :( my hands keep swelling mainly my right hand on my little finger, I got sent home from work yesterday as no painkillers were helping :(
